Don’t wait until your AC quits on a hot day… ☀️

Your system usually gives warning signs first:

✔️ Weak airflow
✔️ Not cooling like it should
✔️ Strange noises
✔️ Higher energy bills
✔️ Turning on and off frequently

⚠️ Small issues now = big repairs later

If something feels off, it’s worth checking before the heat hits.

🎿 Proud to support the Dave Spencer Classic!

Garrhs was honored to sponsor the Dave Spencer Classic again this year, benefiting Adaptive Sports Association right here in Durango.

This event brings the community together for a great cause — helping make outdoor recreation accessible for people of all abilities through adaptive equipment, instruction, scholarships, and year-round outdoor adventures.

Our team was out representing Garrhs on the mountain — James, Zack, Aaron, and Ash — and we’re proud of them for showing up in support of such an important local organization.

Thank you to Adaptive Sports Association for all you do for Southwest Colorado!

How long should your AC system last in Durango? 🤔

Most systems last 12–18 years… but mountain conditions can change that.

What impacts lifespan:
✔️ Installation quality
✔️ Maintenance (or lack of it)
✔️ Airflow & filter choice
✔️ Dust, debris, and altitude

⚠️ Poor airflow and neglected maintenance are the biggest reasons systems fail early.

If your system is over 10 years old or not performing like it used to, it may be time to take a closer look.

You never know what you’ll find during HVAC maintenance… 🐝😳

This outdoor unit wasn’t just working hard — it was hosting a full-on bee condo inside the electrical panel!

Regular maintenance isn’t just about efficiency and lifespan — it’s about catching the unexpected before it turns into a bigger (and potentially dangerous) problem.

If it’s been a while since your system was checked, it might be time… before your AC becomes part of the La Plata wildlife habitat.

Struggling with dust or allergies in your home? 🤧

Your air filter might be the reason.

Quick Air Filter guide:
✔️ MERV 8–10 → best for airflow & most homes
✔️ MERV 10–11 → better for dust & allergies (but can restrict airflow in some systems)
✔️ Thicker (4–5”) filters help improve filtration without overworking your system

⚠️ Bigger number isn’t always better—too much restriction can stress your HVAC system.

If air quality is still an issue, Garrhs can upgrade you to an electrostatic filtration system—one of the best ways to improve air quality without sacrificing airflow.

Is your AC ready for Durango’s warmer days? ☀️

Before the heat really hits, take a few minutes to check:
✔️ Air filter clean
✔️ Outdoor unit clear of debris
✔️ Vents open and airflow strong

A quick check now can help you avoid breakdowns later.

If anything feels off—or you just want peace of mind—our team at Garrhs Heating & Air Conditioning is here to help.

For over 60 years, Garrhs has been more than just a business; it's been a family legacy rooted in the Southwest Colorado community. We've built our reputation on a foundation of trust, integrity, and a deep commitment to our employees and customers, ensuring quality work and fair practices that stand the test of time.

The Roots of Our Family Business

Our story began in Phoenix in the 1930s, when Louis J. Oliger, our grandfather, established Louis J. Oliger Sheet Metal. He was a true "go-getter" and "people person," building strong relationships that laid the groundwork for our future. The early business focused on sheet metal for industrial applications. In World War II, we even built vats for Seagrams to support its war efforts, showcasing an early spirit of adaptability.

In the early 1950s, drawn by the charm of a small town and a desire to escape the Phoenix heat, our grandfather relocated the business to Durango, marking the beginning of our deep connection to this community. Our family moved with him, and his son, Jim, became involved with the business as a young boy. A symbol of our enduring legacy, the original 1930s "snips" logo, representing metal shears, remains a proud part of our identity today, carried through generations. The name "Garrhs" itself, though a shortened nickname of Mark Oliger, reflects the personal touch and family connection at the heart of our company.

Evolution and Adaptation

Jim worked for his dad “Louie” throughout the 60s and 70s, at which point the business name transitioned to Oliger Sheet Metal as the grandfather retired in the late 70s or early 80s. During the 1960s, a significant part of the early work included building "meter houses," or metal buildings for gas wells, producing hundreds, if not thousands, that were sent to Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. This segment made the business heavily dependent on the oil and gas industry. As Durango grew and industries shifted, so did Garrhs. Our business evolved significantly from its early sheet metal focus to specializing in heating and air conditioning throughout this period.

James' son Mark took over the business in the early 80s, rebuilding and strengthening it after the oil and gas industry crashed, deeply impacting a significant segment of their business. Working alongside his father for years, Mark started to include the next generation of Oligers, including Jim’s other son Travis and later Mark and Travis's kids, further strengthening our resolve and contributing to our growth.

Over the years, we've navigated profound changes in the industry and in our town of Durango. From advancements in energy efficiency and environmental considerations to sophisticated technology systems, we've consistently adapted while maintaining our core values and dedication to the Durango community and our team.

Our Values, Our Community, Our Legacy

At Garrhs, our commitment has always extended beyond services to the people and community we serve. We pride ourselves on high-quality work and honest, fair business practices, aspiring to provide complete customer satisfaction unequaled by anyone else. Our dedication to our employees is equally strong, reflected in our remarkably high employee retention – a rarity in our industry. We foster an environment where employees feel valued and supported, even going the extra mile to ensure their participation in retirement plans because we care deeply about their well-being and their families. This nurturing approach has been a cornerstone of our success, contributing to our consistent recognition as the #1 HVAC provider in Durango – an accolade earned through reliable, conscientious work, not aggressive promotion.

For us, Garrhs' legacy is deeply tied to the Durango community. It’s about more than just business; it’s about providing employees with solid jobs that allow them to thrive and raise their families in this beautiful place. We actively strive to be reliable and do conscientious work, focusing on always "doing the right thing" even in challenging situations to ensure customers feel treated right.

With our new partnership with American Dream Home Services (ADHS), an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) company, our core values of integrity, community impact, and legacy preservation are not just maintained but significantly strengthened. This transition empowers our employees through ownership, ensuring a secure and prosperous future for both our dedicated team and the Durango community we proudly call home, enabling us to continue our tradition of contributing to the well-being of the place we all live and work.

🍔 BBQ, bingo, and a bold idea: what if every employee could be an owner?

The Garrhs team recently came together for our first Employee Ownership BBQ — a chance to celebrate the people who make Garrhs what it is. We invited families and significant others to join us, and nearly 70 attendees filled the park with laughter, kids’ games, and the unmistakable smell of great BBQ on a perfect Colorado afternoon.

To make the day even more memorable, David Shurna led a round of “Employee Ownership & Garrhs History Bingo,” complete with prizes like Garrhs-branded gear, a gift card to a local employee-owned restaurant, and another to a locally owned fly-fishing and outdoor store — small but meaningful ways to celebrate the community and ownership values we share.

Events like this are more than just a party. They reflect the culture we’re building at Garrhs — one rooted in integrity, pride, and shared ownership. We believe that when employees have a real stake in the company’s success, everything changes. Pride grows. Commitment deepens. And together, we build a future that honors the legacy of those who came before us while creating opportunity for the next generation.

We’re proud of this team. Proud of Garrhs’ 60-year history. And excited about the ownership journey ahead.

Employee-Owned. Powered by Pride.

We had full hearts after spending the afternoon with two shop classes at Ignacio High School, introducing students to the HVAC trade.
After a quick overview of opportunities in the HVAC trade, the students jumped into a hands-on ductwork project using real tools — snips, Malco hole cutters, flex duct, wall stack, and end caps. The classroom sounded like a jobsite in no time.
Huge thanks to Dede Mathews, Molly Turner, and Cody Haga High School for welcoming us. The future of the skilled trades is bright, and we’re proud to help students explore it. 🔧🔥
