Dengue Fever is on the rise in west central Florida. It is transmitted through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The internet says their peak biting times are early morning from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and afternoon from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Unfortunately, this is when gardeners/walkers tend to be outdoors in Florida.

On Aug. 21-22, Floridians of all ages can join the Great Southeast Pollinator Census, a citizen science effort led in Florida by UF/IFAS Extension. All you need is a blooming plant, 15 minutes, and a little curiosity.

Choose a flowering plant in your yard, a park, schoolyard, or community garden, then count the bees, butterflies, beetles, and other pollinators that visit. No scientific experience or insect identification skills are required!

In 2025, Floridians submitted more than 5,100 counts across 59 counties and helped create 183 new sustainable pollinator habitats. This year, the goal is to reach all 67 Florida counties and double participation to 10,000 counts.

Before Hammock Park became the park we know today, this land was already part of people’s daily lives — a place of water, trees, shade, curiosity, and discovery.
These old photographs offer a rare glimpse into the Hammock’s earlier days, when visitors explored the Cedar Creek area, walked through shallow water, gathered under the trees, and experienced the landscape in a much wilder form.
That is what makes Hammock Park’s history so powerful. It is not just a story about land. It is a story about people, place, and the generations who recognized that this natural space was worth remembering and protecting.
