Kicking off Phase 3 of our project down in Cambridge by buttoning the house up a bit better before winter sets in to help rodent proof it after the Orkin man documented several access points earlier this season. We’re using a variety of tools to achieve this; copper mesh, OSI Quad Max, galvanized mesh, rodent repelling foam, aluminum flashing, and some detour rodent repellent to ensure they are deterred.

Back in Cambridge to crank out a couple smaller beds with Green Velvet Boxwoods and some Woodland Phlox along with some really nice WI river rock.
I sheet mulched using some fantastically thick bicycle boxes from my friends at Twin Ports Cyclery, incorporated 97% recycled edging, and the plants were sourced from the lovely folks at Prairie Restorations and via special order to a local greenhouse. It really helped to add some curb appeal to the front entrance of my clients home.

Kicked off a new project installing a fieldstone patio for a cedar hot tub north of Duluth. We dry stacked a retaining wall from on-site rocks, added 5 tons of class 5 to create a pad, a bed of washed sand and then placed 2.5 tons of beautiful fieldstone steppers before locking it all together with polymeric sand.
It’ll be a magical space once it all grows in and the homeowner gets the wood fired hot tub set up.

I'll forever be grateful for Judy taking a risk on Uppfinna when I was first starting out. I've enjoyed hearing about how restoring the seasonal creek has helped the drainage of the back yard and lessened the amount her sump pump needs to work as compared to before. MN was the first state in the US to approve straw bale within the building code as of this July.

Back in Proctor today to treat the remaining Buckthorn with Triclopoyr. Triclopyr is a systemic, selective herbicide that acts as a synthetic auxin (growth hormone) mimic, causing uncontrollable growth, stem twisting, and curling in broadleaf and woody plants until they die.

I'm utilizing an amines formulation mixed 1:4 with water and also containing a blue dye and applied to the cambium layer of the stump after being cut to ground level. I'm using a paint marker to strategically apply instead of a foliar spray to limit the amount of drift and leeching into ground water as its highly mobile in soil.

While I'm generally against using herbacides as a general practice, the ability to apply to a stump in a low exposure systematic fashion makes it a worthwhile effort over manual removal.
