New Signs!

While we started moving into the new location a couple of months ago, we finally have some signage! "We just bought an EV."

That was the case at a Duluth home this week, where a new all-electric Toyota bZ was about to land on a 100 amp service that didn't have the room to charge it.

So we're doing it in two phases. Phase one, which we knocked out this week, was a new 200 amp Eaton CH meter-main on the house, a trench across to the detached garage, and a new 90 amp feeder run underground in conduit to a new garage subpanel. From there a dedicated 60 amp circuit feeds the ChargePoint charger.

Digging in Duluth and on the North Shore is never just digging, it's rock, old fill, and other surprises once you're past the grass but we get it done and put the yard back afterwards.

We will be doing Phase Two is next week with a 200 amp feeder to a new basement panel and the service mast moved over to the new meter base.

One of the stranger calls we get is when half of a house goes dark while the other half works fine. To an electrician, that often means a "leg" of the service or feeder has failed, and when it runs underground, the problem is buried where nobody can see it.

That was a Duluth Heights home this past Saturday. Our freeze-and-thaw cycles had most likely finally killed the original buried conductors, so we rebuilt the service with a new 200 amp emergency disconnect at the meter, new feeder in heavy-wall conduit routed under the deck to spare the landscaping, surge protection, new ground rods, and the old panel converted to a clean, fully relabeled subpanel.

Another EV charger install in the books! Our team was out in Duluth today setting up this Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A Level 2 charger for a happy customer and their VW ID.4. This unit delivers serious charging speed — up to 11.5 kW — so they'll be waking up to a full battery every morning.

We mounted the charger on a clean vinyl backer board to match the home's siding, ran new conduit, and wired it to a dedicated 60A breaker in the panel. Permitted, inspected, and ready to roll.

This was a bigger ‘modernize the property’ kind of project with lots of moving parts. It started with a new pole barn and resulted in a new 200 amp service on the property feeding the house, pole barn, and shed. The house got a new 200 amp feeder and panel upgrade to replace an old 100 amp FUSE box.

We got an emergency call from a commercial kitchen: their dough mixer went down right before a busy day. The cord end had arced at the receptacle and the connection was burned, so they couldn’t make pizza dough until it was fixed.

We hustled over, replaced the damaged receptacle and cord end, then tested and verified the connections so the equipment was safe to put back into service. We had them back up and running in time to make dough for the lunch rush.

Heat damage like this is almost always a connection problem—worn contacts, loose terminations, or a plug/receptacle that’s reached end-of-life. If you ever notice a plug that feels warm, looks discolored, smells “electrical,” or fits loose, shut the equipment down and get it checked before it turns into downtime. If your business relies on high-use equipment, periodic inspection of cord ends and specialty receptacles is inexpensive insurance.
