Yes, thank you to everyone who has volunteered in the past for Grandma's Marathon!

Are you thinking of volunteering this year?

We are looking to provide order to the chaos and added safety for all participants and spectators.

For finish line security and relief, there are a variety of volunteer opportunities available:

-Fence line monitoring
-Crowd control at specific “gateway” locations,
-Bag checking at bleachers
-Identification monitoring at Finish Line access points
-Observing and assisting in Runners' Recovery areas
-Watching individuals or groups within the crowds whose behavior may be questionable
-Coordinating with Duluth police, and defining runner and wheeler routes through the final 500’ of the race, right up to the Finish Line

This year will be the largest group of runners ever to start the marathon and half marathon. Over, these past 46 years the race has gone from 150 runners to well over 20,000. Now the 10th largest marathon in the country.

Grandma's Volunteers Needed!

This will be the largest group of runners ever to start the marathon and half marathon. Over 46 years, the race has gone from 150 runners to well over 20,000. It is now the 10th largest marathon in the country. Our community needs your support!

With runners, come spectators, friends, family, media, and abundant spending in Duluth’s hospitality and retail businesses. With so many people gathered on and around race day, it is important to provide order to the chaos and added safety to all participants and spectators. In fact, over 5500 community volunteers, with Duluth Safety officers, come together to make the race happen smoothly and securely.
On the day of the race, there is no more populated place than the Finish Line. To relieve some crowd pressure on the Finish Line venue, the marathon has extended its festivities to Bayfront Park, but there is still a need to provide oversight and order to both the secured and fenced Finish Line itself and the spectator and services zone outside of the last 1/4 mile of the finish.

I have coordinated the Finish Line Volunteer Team for 22 years. It takes 70 or more people to do this work and I would sincerely like your help on this year’s team. There are a variety of duties available, from roving fence line monitors to crowd control at specific “gateway” locations, to bag checking at bleachers, identification monitoring at Finish Line access points, observing and assisting in Runners Recovery areas, scrutinizing and watching individuals or groups within the crowds whose behavior may be questionable and coordinating with Duluth police, and defining runner and wheeler routes through the final 500’ of the race, right up through the Finish Line. I can define a location that fits your interests and teach you what you need to know to be most helpful.

Island Restyle -

It all began with a 22' x 34' cabin at the end of a gravel road. Then a complete reorganization of the cabin and its outbuildings continued, searching for a "Welcome Home."

A timber columned porch wrapped old and new construction to create a new hierarchy of forms on the site, and a clear destination.

Modernization without change of scale. The everyday spaces of the home are more functional, useful and beautiful with the incorporation of the simple, neutral materials.

We begin with the Site: its context, orientation, topography, and its character.

The project is an occupied place full of cohesive landscape of imagery, function, and culture. Inspiration comes from the land and from YOU: your opinions, your patterns, your practices, and your lifestyle. We ask and learn from you.

The Woodland Retreat pictured here arose between two hills: a Bridge-House. Informed by its terrain to simply join two topographical features. The site was carefully preserved.

The St. Louis Maison -

Inspired by relic French Farmhouses in rolling hills. The site for this project was its greatest challenge. Still complete with amazing vistas, the location is a steep peninsula in the St. Louis River about 5 miles from its confluence with Lake Superior.

Carefully located so that extended functions could be appended in the form of simply constructed and traditionally crafted white stick-framed "rooms", full of daylight and reflectivity.

As the family grew so did the additions. Outside patios and spaces were created until they reached the wild edges of the landscape.
