If you are local to the Des Moines area, PLEASE consider attending this INCREDIBLE event!! I will be here as an art vendor and a spoken word performer. This will be my 3rd year attending the festival and I CAN NOT SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS about this event! This program is put on by such amazing people who are forging the path forward for transgender people. I know they help by spreading the word and helping people to find and apply for the Iowa Trans Mutual Aid Fund, and post when there is local help with name and gender marker changes. This is an event for and about transgender artists, it focuses on a highly oppressed class of people and the artwork that comes out of that. Seeing all of the people there, both the artists and those in attendance. It moves me to feel like I am not as alone as I sometimes feel I am. I am so excited for next weekend, I hope to see a big crowd as well as many of you there!

Hector was an amazing instructor. This was my second class under him and I am forever impressed. πŸ‘

Thank you, Hector, for imparting your wisdom on us, and thank you to Bluff Strokes, for providing the opportunity for this class to take place so I can learn!

Last post for now...

Now it's time for something current, but also from the days of the past!! If you haven't been out to the Smokestack this month yet, I have 3 pieces on display for the DAAC in Retrospective show. There will be a silent auction (which I will donate an original and prints to) towards the end of this month, so you will have another chance to see them before the end of the show. Horace was also recently shown at Planted during their October show, but this is his "social media" debut. Let's give him a round of applause, shall we? πŸ‘ Painted a few years ago, he was inspired by my facial hair growth, and it took FOREVER to dry (LOTS of linseed oil! πŸ˜†). Due to the odd size, he cost almost $100 to frame, so I hope you like the frame I picked! πŸ˜„

"To Grandmother's House
- (Ashen Grey)"

12Γ—12 acrylic on framed canvas. NFS.

Yesterday was my grandma's 95th birthday, so I made her a very special painting. She asked me a long time (~2 year ago) for a painting, and I told her I had an idea for something special I wanted to do for her, something inspired by one of her favorite painters. It took me that long from forming the idea to take it from a place of inspiration, to visualization, to then having an AH HA" moment while walking past an old, already done study. I painted over that bold orange canvas earlier this year in bright pastels with that idea still in mind. However, as all things in life, things changed. As you may know, my grandmother has begun to develop some cognitive impairments. Watching her memory slowly decline, and its affects on both her ADL's and her happiness, have taken an emotional toll on both myself and our family. As her birthday drew nearer, I knew I had a deadline, and the painting slowly began to change. By the end, I was left with something so much more conceptual than I ever thought it would be.

What do you see? How does this make you feel?

The frame unfortunately broke in the corner as I was adding the saw tooth hanging device.
(I dropped it. πŸ™„πŸ˜’πŸ˜…) -》To be reframed!γ€Š-

Photos in order: Finished and framed worked, followed by the original work that was painted over and the progression of how it continued to change. Then a few more photos of it framed at the end. Plus a few bonus pics of Diesel! πŸ˜‰ Even though the frame broke, I intend to either try and fix the frame or get the same one again. πŸ˜ͺ

I did some painting today for my new series I'm working on. This is called "I am a Universe" and is water mixable oils on 16Γ—20 canvas. It is for sale for $90, although it is not available to be taken home until after the series is complete as I'm hoping to do an exhibit with it. Thanks for looking! Please like and share!
