Today, we are repotting a GIANT ZZ Plant that has been a resident of our neighborhood Brewery, Dimensional for over 5 years now. This gal is flowering, abundant in thick roots and water storage organs.

For this repotting, we used our custom Aroid potting blend. This blend has a nice mix of our “Base” Sungro All Purpose Potting Soil, added perlite, and coco chunks to improve drainage, pore space, and breath-ability of the root system.

When repotting, we generally go about 1-2 inches in diameter larger than the root system. This decision is based on the plant’s preferences and growth rate.

How to get your ZZ looking this stellar?! This babe was positioned adjacent to a large Eastern exposure window with lots of high quality morning light. While ZZ plants are considered to be low light options, they do grow much better with more light. Their natural form is also more of what we call an “open vase shape” where the leaves naturally cascade down to the sides as the leaves grow larger. Not to be confused with a “leggy” specimen that simply cannot hold the weight of its own leaves.

Join Quintin repotting Laura’s GIANT monstera deliciosa!

This plant has a rich history, starting about 10 years ago (before Planted. was even conceptualized), growing in Laura’s home until it outgrew the ceilings (the first time). It was transported to Dimensional to continue it’s epic, upward climb where it grew for about a year. During a routine repotting, we accidentally snapped the very tall vine while getting the plant out of the pot and were forced to propagate it.

Outgrowing Laura’s home for a second time (as Monsteras do) we brought it BACK to Dimensional where it will receive all the public adoration it deserves and continue gaining size.

For repotting, we upgraded this monstera into a 20” nursery pot (from a 16”) and used our Planted. Custom Aroid Blend composed of Potting Soil with added perlite and coco coir chunks for improved drainage and air movement around the roots. A whiskey barrel seemed the perfect “nesting” vessel for this babe, as Dimensional is known for their popular Barrel Aged Stouts and other incredible brews.
