By Labor Day, the new 2023 edition will be on the shelves in local retail shops: Almanac.com/WhereToBuy. The Old Farmer’s Almanac is North America's #1 Almanac—the biggest, best-selling periodical and also the oldest almanac—since George Washington's time as president. "A calendar of the heavens," The Old Farmer's Almanac speaks to all walks of life: forecasts for those who don't like the question of weather left up in the air; tide tables for those who live near the ocean; planting charts for those who garden; recipes for those who live in the kitchen; Moon phases for those who love to watch the sky; folklore, wit, and wisdom. Thomas, guide us still: "strive always to be useful, but with a pleasant degree of humor."

Today is International Cat Day! 🐈️ Cats around the world are surrounded by fun folklore and interesting myths.

In Britain, especially Wales, it was believed that rain was likely if a cat busily washed its ears.

In Holland, cats could predict the wind by clawing at carpets and curtains.

If a cat licked its fur against the grain, it meant a hailstorm was coming; if it sneezed, rain was on the way; and if it was frisky, the wind would soon blow.

Some folks even believed cats could start storms through magic, so sailors always made sure cats were content. 🐈️ Learn more at Almanac.com/can-cats-predict-weather-changes

Wildfire season is raging, but there are measures you can take to help protect your home from damage 🔥

Long before flames reach a house, flying embers—called firebrands—can find their way into gutters, vents, cracks, and other vulnerable places.

In fact, your home is more likely to ignite from a firebrand than from direct contact with flames 🔥🔥🔥

A little clearing, cleaning, and careful tending around the house can give firebrands fewer places to catch—and firefighters a better chance to defend your home. Find our detailed guidelines at Almanac.com/when-wildfire-threatens-protecting-your-home-embers 🔥

Get ready for a LUNAR ECLIPSE in just a few weeks! 🌑 On the night of August 27, a partial lunar eclipse will leave the Moon nearly swallowed by Earth’s shadow, and will be visible to most of North America.

Depending on where you live, here's when to see the eclipse in each time zone on August 27:

🌑 9:12 p.m. PDT
🌑 10:12 p.m. MDT
🌑 11:12 p.m. CDT
🌑 12:12 a.m. EDT on August 28

The entire eclipse lasts more than 5 hours, but the obvious partial phase—when Earth’s dark inner shadow crosses the Moon—lasts about 3 hours and 18 minutes. The above times reference the time of the maximum eclipse.
