Water lilies are my absolute favorite dahlia form to hybridize.

This is the first to bloom in our breeding patch this year, grown from seed, and it’s always exciting to see what surprises emerge. This one won’t make the cut this season as it is a highlighter yellow color, and lower petal count isn’t quite what I’m looking for. It’s still a beautiful glimpse into what’s possible.

The breeding patch after dark always has a few surprises. ✨ Tonight, I stumbled across these fresh blooms that opened while the sun was down. They probably won’t earn a place as keepers in our breeding program, but for one fleeting moment, they still get to steal the show.
