An outlet stopped working? Before assuming the outlet is bad, check something else first.

Look around for a GFCI outlet with TEST and RESET buttons.

Sometimes a GFCI in one location protects other outlets that don’t look like GFCIs at all. That means the outlet that stopped working might not actually be where the problem started.

Press RESET once and see if power returns.

If it won’t reset, immediately trips again, or you’re losing power repeatedly, that’s when we’d recommend having an electrician find out why.

And we’re curious…

What electrical problem in your house has confused you the most?

Put it in the comments. We may turn it into one of our next homeowner tips.

Most homeowners only see the part where we pull into the driveway.

But before that happens, there’s already been a conversation in our office about why you called, what you’re experiencing, and what our electrician needs to know before walking through your door.

We want our technicians showing up prepared, introducing themselves, listening to what’s going on, and actually taking the time to understand the problem.

That’s a big part of how we’ve tried to run Sylvester Electric since 1979.

So if you see one of our trucks heading through Dracut, Lowell, Chelmsford or somewhere around the Merrimack Valley today, now you know a little more about what happens before we get there.

Be honest…

Do you have a light switch somewhere in your house that you have absolutely NO IDEA what it does? 😂

You’ve flipped it 20 times.

Nothing happens.

You’ve lived there for years.

Still a mystery.

If you have one, you’re definitely not alone. Older homes especially can have switches left behind from old lights, switched receptacles, fans or previous renovations.

Saturday question: How many mystery switches are currently living in your house?

1979 looked a little different.

No smartphones.
No Wi-Fi.
No EV chargers in the garage.
And nobody was worrying about how many devices were plugged into the kitchen counter.

That’s the year Sylvester Electric got started.

Homes and the amount of electricity we use have changed quite a bit since then, but the basic idea behind our company really hasn’t.

Do good work. Treat people right. Be there when homeowners need you.

We’re pretty proud that a local family electrical company started in 1979 is still serving homeowners across Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire today.

August in New England means air conditioners, dehumidifiers, pool equipment, fans and plenty of other equipment can all be running at the same time.

That’s also when homeowners sometimes start noticing breakers tripping that normally don’t.

A breaker that trips once may simply need to be reset.

A breaker that keeps tripping is telling you something.

Don’t keep resetting it over and over or replace it with a larger breaker. That’s the point where it makes sense to have the circuit checked and find out why it’s happening.

Stay cool out there. ☀️

Sometimes an electrical problem gives you a warning before it becomes something much bigger.

Kyle was recently called to a home in Lowell after the homeowner noticed crackling and unusual noises coming from the exterior meter socket. That’s definitely not something to ignore.

After evaluating the service, Kyle completed an emergency service change and upgraded the home from a 100 amp to a new 200 amp electrical service.

This is a good reminder for homeowners: if you ever hear buzzing, crackling, popping, or other unusual sounds coming from your electrical equipment, have it checked. Electrical problems don’t always trip a breaker or shut the power off first.

Proud of Kyle for getting this Lowell homeowner taken care of and their electrical service safely upgraded. 👍

HOMEOWNER QUESTION 👇

If you could add ONE electrical upgrade to your house tomorrow, which would you choose?

A. Better outdoor lighting
B. More outlets exactly where you need them
C. Recessed lighting
D. A ceiling fan in the room that’s always too hot
E. Something completely different

I’m curious which one wins.

There really isn’t a wrong answer. After working in homes throughout Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire for decades, we’ve learned that the “little” improvements are sometimes the ones homeowners enjoy the most.

One thing electricians tend to notice almost immediately when they walk into a house…

The outlets.

Not because we’re trying to find something wrong 😂

Older two-prong outlets, loose receptacles, multiple extension cords, scorched marks, missing GFCI protection in certain areas and outlets that no longer hold a plug securely can tell quite a story about a home’s electrical system.

Homeowners see a place to plug in the vacuum.

Electricians sometimes see 40+ years of a home’s history.

Quick Monday challenge: look around the room you’re sitting in right now.

Do you see any extension cords being used as permanent wiring, outlets that feel loose when you plug something in, power strips plugged into other power strips, or switches that just “haven’t worked right” for a while?

Most electrical problems don’t start with something dramatic. A lot of them start as a small annoyance homeowners simply get used to.

You don’t need to diagnose it yourself. Just noticing when something has changed is a good first step.

What’s the one electrical thing in your house you’ve been meaning to get fixed? 👇
