Fall is a good time to give a few electrical items around the house a quick check. 🍂

Before the colder weather settles in, take a minute to:

• Test your smoke and CO alarms
• Check outdoor GFCI outlets
• Make sure extension cords aren’t being used as permanent wiring
• Pay attention to lights that flicker or breakers that keep tripping
• Check that electric heaters have plenty of space around them

A few simple checks now can help catch problems before winter, when we tend to use more electricity around the house.

And if something doesn’t seem right, don’t take chances with electrical work. Have a licensed electrician take a look.

Outlet suddenly stopped working? Before assuming something is broken, check for a GFCI outlet nearby.

Sometimes one GFCI can protect several outlets, so the outlet that needs to be reset may actually be in another bathroom, the garage, basement or even outside.

Press the RESET button firmly and see if power returns.

If the GFCI won’t reset or keeps tripping, that’s usually a good time to have an electrician take a look rather than continuing to reset it.
