**Family Lawn Care**

We’ve had a bit of a shift this week with the cold front and some rain move through. Soil temperatures have dropped off roughly 15° compared to last week.

That slowdown can temporarily pause turfgrass as it’s trying to wake up — but it doesn’t stop everything.

With warmer weather already in the forecast for this weekend, things will start right back up again.

Here’s what that means for lawns in our area:

• Warm-season grass may stall briefly, then continue its spring transition
• Cool-season w**ds won’t miss a beat — especially with the added moisture
• As soon as temperatures rebound, w**d growth will pick right back up

This kind of back-and-forth is typical for early spring. The key is staying ahead of those w**ds before the turf fully comes out of dormancy and starts competing.

If you’re seeing w**ds hang on or start to take off, it’s right in line with what we’re seeing across the area.

With several rounds of rain in the forecast next week, here’s what that means for lawns in our area.

Rain this time of year can be a good thing — but it can also expose underlying issues.

Here’s what to watch for:

• **Standing water that lingers** more than a day — this usually signals grading or compaction issues.
• **Washed out or thinning areas** where seed or topsoil may shift.
• **Weeds accelerating quickly** — cool-season w**ds will take full advantage of moisture while warm-season turf is still waking up.
• **Mushy soil and rutting** if equipment or mowing happens too soon after heavy rain.

Right now, turfgrass is just starting to transition. Excess moisture combined with warming soil temperatures creates a window where w**ds can surge and drainage problems become obvious.

Rain doesn’t create lawn problems — it reveals them.

If you notice pooling water, fast-moving w**ds, or thin areas after the storms move through, it’s a good time to address them before the growing season really kicks in.

This client had several old stumps that had been an eyesore for quite some time and were preventing the lawn from establishing evenly.

We removed the stumps, cleaned up the affected areas, and regraded the lawn to create a smoother surface with improved drainage and water flow.

To complete the project, the area was overseeded with a rye and Bermuda blend. The rye provides quick germination and early coverage, helping stabilize the soil, while the Bermuda will take over as temperatures warm and the growing season gets underway.

Good results start with proper preparation, and this project is a great example of how addressing underlying issues can set a lawn up for long-term success.

This project started with the removal of a paver stone flower bed that ran the full length of the home.

Once cleared, we brought in quality topsoil and carefully graded the area to improve drainage and promote proper water flow — setting the foundation for healthy turf long term.

The area was then overseeded with a rye grass and Bermuda blend. The rye establishes quickly to provide fast coverage and erosion control, while the Bermuda will take over as temperatures rise and the growing season gets underway.

Good lawns start with good preparation. Proper soil, grading, and seed selection make all the difference in how an area establishes and performs over time.

With the warm temperatures and weekend rain, w**ds are starting to take off across lawns in our area.

Right now, turfgrass is still mostly dormant — but it won’t stay that way much longer. As soil temperatures continue to climb, lawns will begin waking up for the growing season.

This creates a short window where w**ds are active and easier to control before the turf fully greens up and competition increases.

Getting ahead of tough winter and cool-season w**ds now helps set the stage for a cleaner, healthier lawn heading into spring.

If you’ve noticed w**ds picking up in your yard lately, you’re not alone — it’s exactly what we’re seeing across the area.

Here’s what we’re seeing in lawns around our area right now:

• Rescue grass starting to show up in Bermuda
• Fescue clumps becoming more noticeable
• Other cool-season grasses and winter w**ds taking advantage of this transition window

This is a tricky time of year. Warm-season lawns aren’t fully active yet, but cool-season w**ds are.

If pre-emergent wasn’t applied last fall, many of these have already germinated. At this point, they can be controlled — but not prevented. Prevention only works before they sprout.

That’s why timing matters.

Our 7-step lawn treatment program is designed around those seasonal shifts. Applications are spaced about 40 days apart to stay ahead of w**d cycles and feed the turf when it can actually use it.

Programs start at $65 per service.

The goal isn’t just spraying w**ds.
It’s building thicker, healthier turf that naturally crowds them out over time.

If you’ve been noticing some of this in your yard and aren’t sure what stage you’re in, feel free to reach out. Happy to take a look and point you in the right direction.

Photos like this are why timing and product choice matter.

Same soil.
Same weather.
Two different treatment approaches.

On the left is a lawn on a consistent treatment program with properly timed applications and quality products. On the right is what happens when timing, product choice, or consistency isn’t quite there.

In our area, lawn health isn’t about one spray. It’s about staying ahead of w**d cycles and feeding the turf when it can actually respond.

Thicker turf doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built over time with the right plan.

If you’ve been wondering whether your lawn is getting what it needs, this is a good example of how much difference a structured program can make.

Don't commit . Cutting back crape myrtle trees is not, and never has been, the preferred way of handling these graceful and beautiful trees. In addition, it is not healthy for the trees in the long run. Cutting back crape myrtles creates large wounds that can serve as points of entry for fungal decay organisms. Pruning like this shortens the life of the tree. Read more from LSU AgCenter horticulturist Mary Helen Ferguson: https://tinyurl.com/2srst86m.

It’s time to start the **first round of lawn treatments** — and it’s one of the most important applications of the year.

**Pre-emergent treatment** helps stop w**ds **before they ever come up.**
This application targets the next w**d cycle and helps prevent the w**ds that usually show up around **May and June.**

If you didn’t get a pre-emergent down last fall, there’s a good chance you’ll see some w**ds this spring. Those seeds have already germinated, we can treat and control them after they come up — but we can’t stop the ones that have already germinated.

**What this treatment DOES do:**
It puts a barrier in place now to prevent the next round of w**ds from ever getting established.

Getting your pre-emergent applied at the right time is the difference between fighting w**ds all summer… or staying ahead of them.

Message us today to get on the schedule and keep your lawn looking its best this season.

It's time for Pre-emergent

Pre-emergent is important because it prevents w**ds from germinating and taking root in your lawn by creating a chemical barrier in the soil, essentially stopping w**d seeds from sprouting before they even emerge above ground, thus significantly reducing the need to later hand-pull or spray existing w**ds; this is particularly valuable for controlling common problematic w**ds like crabgrass.
