Fun Fact Friday: The Story Behind Orangeburg Pipe

Did you know Orangeburg pipe was once marketed as a “root-proof” piping solution?

First introduced in the late 1800s and widely used throughout North America from the 1950s-1970s, Orangeburg pipe was made from layers of wood pulp fiber and coal-tar pitch. Its lightweight design, corrosion resistance, and ease of installation made it a popular choice for sewer and utility applications.

But as these systems aged, crews discovered a different story underground. Over time, the material could deteriorate, soften, and lose its structural integrity, creating openings where one of nature’s toughest opponents could enter: tree roots.

While Orangeburg pipe played an important role in the history of underground infrastructure, it also serves as a reminder of why understanding pipe materials is critical when maintaining aging sewer systems.

Every pipe has a story. The more we know about the past, the better we can prepare for the future.

Did you know that Chicago's Deep Tunnel system includes more than 110 miles of underground tunnels? 🤯

The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), also known as The Deep Tunnel, was designed to help reduce flooding, improve water quality, and protect Lake Michigan from pollution caused by sewer overflows.

Here are a few impressive facts about this massive infrastructure project:

🔹 110 miles of tunnels across four tunnel systems.

🔹 8–33 feet in tunnel diameter.

🔹 150–300 feet underground.

🔹 More than 11 billion gallons of combined sewage and stormwater storage capacity.

🔹 Over 1 trillion gallons of combined sewage captured since portions of the system began operating in 1981.

Projects like TARP highlight the incredible scale of underground construction and the important role sewer infrastructure plays in protecting communities and our environment. 🌎

That's a lot of work happening beneath our feet!

Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know the ball in the Sewer Equipment logo has a connection to an old sewer-cleaning technique called “balling”? 🌎

The historic photo above shows workers in the Paris sewers using a large ball to help clean and maintain a sewer line running beneath the Seine. This technique, known as balling, used a large ball that was pulled through a sewer pipe, helping clear buildup and debris as it traveled through the line.

Pretty impressive for sewer technology from more than a century ago!

That iconic ball in our logo was inspired by this history, a nod to the ingenuity, tools, and techniques that have shaped the sewer industry over the years.

From a giant ball in the Paris sewers to modern sewer cleaning equipment, some ideas really do stand the test of time. 🌎
