🌧️ It’s been pretty rainy out lately… so let’s talk about water, decks & impervious coverage!

When planning a new deck, one thing homeowners may not realize is that impervious coverage can play a role in the permitting process.

🏡 What is impervious coverage?
It’s the portion of your property covered by surfaces that don’t allow water to naturally soak into the ground. Depending on your municipality, decks and certain areas beneath them may be included when calculating your property’s total impervious coverage.

Why does it matter? Your township or borough may have a maximum percentage of your lot that can be considered impervious. Your house, driveway, sidewalks, patios, sheds, pools—and potentially your new deck— can all factor into that calculation.
If your property is already close to the limit, the size or design of a new deck could affect permit approval and may require additional planning.
That’s why there’s more to planning a deck than picking your favorite decking and railing. We work through the permitting process and requirements so there are fewer surprises along the way.
