This week, we joined a coalition spanning 72 jurisdictions on a brief urging federal courts to block the President’s “birthright citizenship” order.
The order is flatly inconsistent with the text of the 14th Amendment. It would render countless children in our communities ineligible for federally reimbursable programs like Medicaid, foster-care programs, & special education services.
And—because it would prospectively strip citizenship from children born to parents on student or work visas—it would have an outsized impact on university communities like Washtenaw.
Most fundamentally, it alters the bedrock definition of citizenship that has served our nation (and communities) for well over a century. Citizens by birth serve in our military. They are our teachers, first responders, and medical personnel. They are American, and are part of the fabric of our communities. The Order cannot simply change that with the stroke of a pen.
