Happy Wildflower Wednesday! With our recent prescribed burns and abundant rain at Cedar Hill State Park, we are seeing a resurgence of wildflowers, some of which we haven't seen here in years! This week's featured wildflower is the fabulous Prairie Beardtongue (Penstamon cobaea)!

Also called the Foxglove Penstamon for its resemblance to the famous flowers of European folklore, these large bell-shaped flowers are a perfect fit for our declining bumblebees looking for a healthy buffet!

A gentle reminder that all plants and animals, including wildflowers, are protected by law inside our state parks. Let's enjoy these blooms together and leave them to flourish for future visitors!

Pop Up Project: This Friday, April 10th, 9am, show up to spread mulch on the first soft trail designed and planned by the Indian Trail Master Naturalists at the Charles F. Ladd Nature Preserve. We have a tractor to spread mulch piles on the trail; bring a garden rake to spread it. If you have one handy, wheelbarrows will be useful. Meet at the Ladd Preserve parking lot on Cedar Hill Road just north of Danieldale. The weather will be beautiful; hands are what we need. It will be fun. Make a difference.

You read about the Sid Richardson Tract Prairie in Wild DFW: Explore the Amazing Nature Around Dallas-Fort Worth (http://wild-dfw.com/) . The Fort Worth Chapter of Native Prairies Association of Texas invites you to a walkabout on April 25 from 9:00 to 11:30 AM. Reserve soon, because this will sell out. Some of my favorite people will be leading, including Suzanne Tuttle who was essential to and featured in the book.

"Join the Fort Worth Chapter of Native Prairies Association of Texas for a prairie walkabout. Some of the best remaining remnants of Fort Worth Prairie are owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers, surrounding and protecting the watershed of Benbrook Lake. Please join us for a relaxing ramble through the Sid Richardson Tract on the east side of the lake. The spring wildflower season will be in full bloom, so we’ll move at our own gentle pace, enjoying the gifts Nature has to offer. iNaturalist observations are welcomed and encouraged.

Activity is slowing down for the radio-tagged monarchs that we've been following via the Project Monarch Science app. Today, let's take a look at the monarchs' locations for entering Texas.

The black arrows on the map below show a radio-tagged monarch's last detection in Mexico to the first detection in the U.S. The most recent four arrivals from March 26 (CHI009, MES005, MES011) and March 29 (MW024) are represented by the four arrows that are the farthest to the north in Texas.

Also included to the right of the arrows is a map made by Monarch Watch founding director Chip Taylor. Based on spring first sighting records for Mexico reported to Journey North (orange pinpoints), it depicts the suggested interior and coastal pathways (red lines) that monarchs take when reaching the breeding grounds in Texas and beyond.

Stay tuned for some more spring migration updates this week!
