⚠️ MODERATE RISK FOR EXCESSIVE RAINFALL MONDAY ⚠️
The Weather Prediction Center has placed portions of central Iowa in a Moderate Risk (Level 3 of 4) for excessive rainfall today and tonight. A broader Slight Risk surrounds the Moderate Risk and covers a much larger portion of Iowa.
Showers and thunderstorms will move through parts of the state at times today, but the greatest concern for heavy rainfall is expected to develop this evening and continue into the overnight hours. Thunderstorms may repeatedly move across some of the same areas, allowing rainfall totals to quickly add up.
Forecast guidance is showing the potential for 3–5 inches of rain across portions of central Iowa, including around the Des Moines metro, with locally 3–6 inches possible within the corridor of heaviest rainfall.
Scattered flash flooding could develop tonight, with some significant flooding possible where the heaviest rain occurs. Urban areas, poor-drainage locations, creeks and low-water crossings will be particularly vulnerable. The overnight timing could also make flooding more dangerous since flooded roads can be difficult to see in the dark.
Heavy rainfall could linger into early Tuesday morning before gradually shifting away. Not everyone will receive 3–6 inches of rain, but locations underneath repeated thunderstorms could see significant rainfall in a relatively short period of time.
We’ll be monitoring trends throughout the day as we get a better idea of exactly where the heaviest rainfall corridor will set up. Stay weather aware tonight and make sure you have multiple ways to receive any Flash Flood Warnings that may be issued.
