Slingshot Architecture We Bring People Together We are driven by meaningful work created through personal relationships. What drives you will drive us. We are here to have an impact.

We encourage our clients to expect more from design and challenge us to achieve great things for them. We inquire to find the specific drivers for each stakeholder in order to embed them into our work. We are here to create something amazing, purposeful, specific and unexpected. A slingshot won’t do anything if you don’t pull it back. Design lacks meaning if you don’t first seek vision. We must know our client well before we pursue a design with them. We believe in our clients and they believe in us. This relationship, built upon knowledge and trust, infuses the design process with momentum that drives the entire team. We employ simple tools and intense passion to best solve projects with clarity and impact.

Rather than building new, The Franklin in Ankeny transformed existing ground-floor spaces into market-rate housing, creatively reusing areas originally designed for student housing amenities.

Floor-to-ceiling windows bring natural light into the new living spaces, transforming the character and function of the ground floor while embracing residential infill.

🍁🍂 Rich, moody, and grounded. Inspired by the seasonal menu from our neighbors, Happy Home Coffee , we’ve curated four material palettes that pair four of our favorite fall drinks with the warmth of autumn. Deep earthy tones, layered textures, and inviting finishes bring a little extra comfort to everyday spaces.

Special thanks to Happy Home Coffee for the delicious drinks and for keeping us fueled and inspired all season long!

Big news from the studio! 🍺📖

Field Day Brewing Co. in North Liberty is featured in the Fall 2026 issue of Iowa Architect magazine!

One big sculptural roof, a taproom that feels like a hangout, and fire pits and a patio stage right by Liberty Centre Pond. We designed it to be the kind of place that keeps you around for one more pour. 🍻

Thank you to the Field Day crew for being such great partners, and to Iowa Architect and AIA Iowa for telling the story.

We'll be at the College of Design at Iowa State University this Thursday, October 8 for Design Conversations & Connections.

👋 If you’re an ISU design student curious about Slingshot, come say hello. We’d love to connect, answer questions, and share what it’s like to be part of our teaching studio, where interns are immersed in the process and contribute as full collaborators.

Join us in welcoming Edwin to the team as Associate AIA. Edwin joined Slingshot as a summer intern, jumping into multiple projects, presenting ideas, and gaining firsthand experience in the pace and responsibility of professional practice.

“What surprised me most was how much there is to learn. School teaches you how to think and problem-solve, but in the professional environment, you’re starting from scratch — in a great way.”

Now, he's looking forward to taking on new responsibilities and growing alongside the Slingshot team. Meet Edwin: https://slingshotarchitecture.com/team/edwin-villaron/

Located inside Mezzo on Walnut, Slingshot's Des Moines office is surrounded by the energy of people living, working, gathering, and connecting every day. It's a daily reminder that cities aren't defined by their buildings alone, but by the shared lives of the people they bring together.

Our Slinger book club's latest read is Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. The book explores how going beyond expectations and creating memorable experiences can transform not only restaurants, but leadership, teamwork, and any people-centered business.

"Unreasonable Hospitality was a great read to challenge our team to reach clients in new and meaningful ways. It was a reminder of what we already do so well and where we want to go," says Slingshot Associate AIA Donovan Cole.

We're excited to see what ideas we'll bring back to our work. What's on your reading list? 📚

Hospitality should nourish the entire community — guests, workers, and neighbors — through culture of wellness, sustainability, and balance. This retreat is designed to work seamlessly over time, supporting both guest experience and day-to-day operations. Materials, systems, and planning are chosen for durability, ease, and long-term value. Sustainable strategies are integrated in a quiet, practical way that enhances comfort without drawing attention to themselves.

Rooted in Scandi inspiration, the materiality prioritizes balance, warmth, and visual ease. Natural wood and tactile, organic elements work in concert to dissolve the boundary between indoors and out. The result is a curated environment that feels luminous, purposeful, and grounded in nature.

The Decorah housing project with Winneshiek County Development & Tourism brings together three different housing types:
1) Cluster Homes
2) Rowhomes
3) Zero-lot Homes

These styles create a mix of right-sized single-family homes within a more connected, walkable community, while increasing density near established neighborhoods.
