It has come to my attention that the man written about in this article has an association with a business that has a name very similar to DIII Carpentry. Please note that DIII Carpentry has absolutely no association with this man. Please see the attached photos in the comments to take a peek at how I spent my Halloween. I can assure you that my time was NOT spent wearing a hateful costume in a bar.

A Drake hockey coach was dismissed, and a Clive bar faces backlash after a man dressed as a N**i appeared at a Halloween event, sparking outrage and condemnation.

Finished this front porch replacement yesterday. This was special because it was for my neighbors. They were fantastic to work for and very accommodating. They came to me asking for help with fixing their slowly falling entry way and porch and were concerned for the safety of their kids. They certainly should’ve been! It had fallen 3.5” and was being held up by a 2x6 on edge…

The tear out went as smooth as I had hoped. I temporarily supported the entry and porch roof and started to slowly lift them both. This took days. I was able to lift the entry a little over 2” without damaging anything inside! In an ideal world, the entry way would be level, but when lifting a room, I needed to take the fit and function of the doors and window into account. The window functioned fine after the lift and after a little adjusting, the door swung and latched perfectly! However, I was able to frame the new porch floor perfectctly level.

I worked with Techno Metal Post of Iowa to add two more substantial footings that now support the entry way and the front porch. I additionally had the entry way floor coated in closed-cell spray foam insulation and then enclosed it.

The decking for the front porch is a combination of TimberTech Azek Boardwalk and Castle Gate deck boards with a Castle Gate fascia. The front porch post and beams are wrapped in white colored Azek trim. The railing is a gloss white Westbury Tuscany railing to match the window trim.

This was a fun quick build for my neighbors. I’m excited for their family to enjoy the new space for a long, long time!

This post has been a long time coming. I’ve had trouble finding words to describe how fun and challenging this project was for me. Better late than never I suppose!

The homeowner came to me asking for an assessment of the integrity of the old porch. After looking over it, my conclusion was that it would be best to rebuild it, but that it would only be necessary to rebuild everything under the roof. The homeowner was receptive and requested that the new porch be RESPECTFUL to the craftsman style of her beautiful home. So I sat down, put pen to paper and came up with my own structural drawings and decorative post detail that I felt would best suit the style of her home. Additionally, I focused on using some more period-appropriate material for this special project. I’d like to give a big shout out to the great people at Invest DSM for helping make this project possible.

The new porch features two brick planter boxes I had built by my mason friends. The homeowner saw planter boxes from one of my earlier projects and loved them so much we made sure to incorporate them into the project. They are brick capped in Bluestone which I thought would best match the color of the house. Thanks again to my mason friends for all their hard work!

The porch flooring is 1” thick by 3.5” wide tongue and groove black locust decking with a 1” thick by 5.5” wide boarder. Black locust is a beautiful sustainable hardwood that is extremely rot and insect resistant. I sourced this from Robi Decking and they delivered an amazing product! Fun fact: it was commonly used as fence posts on farms back in the day due to its hardness and weather resistance. This porch flooring is finished with Linseed oil. Thanks to my painter friend for all the finishing they did!

The posts were very fun to decorate and did not come as a kit. I built out the bases using clear cedar despite knowing that it would be painted later on. I designed the cap to be just above where the top of the railing would tie in so as to not run into any issues. The top of the posts were wrapped in a thin, smooth Hardie plank to keep the top portion of the posts smaller in proportion to the bases, but still paintable. I find beauty in the simplicity of the design of the posts and feel they paired well with the cedar railing. I sourced the cedar railing from American Porch LLC. Another great product that finished beautifully and visually added a lot to this project.

This was an exciting project for me because it was an opportunity to use more period-appropriate materials to deliver a product that was respectful to the style of the home. I loved every second of this build and cant wait to jump at the chance to complete another project like this!

A personal project I finished just last week: An Heirloom/Jewelry/Cigar Box. Rarely do I get to work with this fine of detail, so it was a pleasure working on something where even the smallest mistake would have been noticeable. It is comprised of Birdseye Maple and Wenge woods finished in Boiled Linseed Oil and Shellac. The inside is lined in Spanish Cedar. The top has a very subtle inlay and all the hardware is Brusso Brass Hardware. I’m hoping to make more pieces like this in the future because it was such a fun and tedious project.

I just completed this massive 44’ x 12’ composite deck rebuild with a 7.5’ x 7.5’ landing and a 17 step staircase! All decking is TimberTech Azek (colors Castle Gate and Boardwalk). The deck features a triple splitter board and boarder, with picture framed steps and a double reveal fascia.

It was important to the homeowner to match the landing/stair railing to the original/existing railing, so I got to work with my new friends at Artistic Iron Works. Kevin offered his expertise and his crew completed their job in a timely and efficient manner. They were a pleasure to work with.

Before ever starting the job, i carefully considered how i would work around and with the existing brick columns. I offered the unique idea of recessing the structural steel 4x4s and beam into the brick columns in order to make the new framing both code compliant and unobtrusive to the eye. This is due to a new paver patio being installed this summer. This is a solution to a problem that the homeowner didn’t know he’d have had another company simply came in and, “banged out this project”. I’d like to personally thank my friend Clint at Chapman Built Decks for helping me frame the majority of this beast in a timely manner. Additionally a huge thanks to my masons for all the tuck pointing.

Simply a pleasure working with this family. I look forward to them enjoying some cool summer evenings on their new deck!

This homeowner had a pipe burst and some water damage in the basement. In two hallways and three rooms the base and some casing (trim) needed replaced to match existing and there were some carpet seams that needed repaired. I coordinated with my flooring/carpet specialist to get the job done as quick and clean as possible. The homeowner had a painter come in after we were done.

This homeowners desperately needed a cost effective deck rebuild! The old deck was already falling off the house, so it was pretty quick to remove. I replaced it with a cedar-tone treated 9’x5’ landing and a few steps down to a large 18’x9’ stage! The homeowners are musically inclined and are excited to jam out with some friends this summer!

Cute nursery remodel I completed just in time for a baby’s arrival. Had to pull before pics of Zillow. I removed the blue carpet, refinished the hard wood floors to match the existing floors and added the wainscoting and the handrail for the stairs. Then I had the walls and trim painted Weston flax yellow. I love the texture the trim adds to the walls when they are painted the same color!

Before and after of a full gut bathroom remodel I completed in Dallas Center. This homeowner has two sets of stairs to get to the laundry in the basement and wanted to add a washer/dryer to this bathroom so she could do her daily laundry and save her knees! Everything went smooth and the end product is clean, simple and bright!
