Last week, our Founding Principal, Cody Knop, AIA, presented a workshop on Goldfinch Lofts to fellow AIA Iowa members at the AIA Iowa Annual Convention.

Goldfinch Lofts has been a great opportunity to explore how ambitious design excellence and high-performance goals can be achieved on an aggressive schedule and budget through clear design thinking, rigorous coordination, and thoughtful collaboration.

Thank you to fellow panelists Janna Alampi, Allison Clemens, and Vinoth Sekar for a great discussion, and to Molly Cutler, Scott Cutler, and the entire Goldfinch Lofts team for making this such a rewarding project to collaborate on.

Located on the second floor of the Miesblock Building in downtown Des Moines, this 6,000 SF tenant improvement project creates a new home for Nelson Development's growing team. The office layout takes cues from the building's rigorous structural module, carrying its rhythm and organization into the interior to create a workspace that feels cohesive, functional, and connected to its setting.

Thoughtful material selections, open collaboration areas, and refined details support the way the company works today while providing the flexibility to adapt and evolve over time.

Construction progress on our Harbor Residence project in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Located on an oceanfront property, this 8,000 square-foot custom residence draws heavily from South Florida’s vernacular architecture. Deep overhangs, shaded loggias, and a low-profile roofline temper the subtropical climate while reinforcing an architectural language rooted in coastal tradition.

The home is organized around two exterior courtyards, a sheltered entry court that establishes a quiet threshold from the street and an oceanfront courtyard that opens to expansive views of Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline beyond. Living spaces flow seamlessly between indoors and out, fostering cross-ventilation and shaded outdoor living. A curated material palette emphasizes locally sourced, sustainable materials, including regional stone and responsibly harvested wood, selected for durability in a marine environment and for their ability to weather gracefully over time.
