In 2016, Callie got sick from chemical lawn fertilizer. Watching her go through that changed everything for me, and it’s the reason Eco-Smart exists.

Today, after 13 and a half years, Callie passed away surrounded by our family.

Every chemical-free lawn we care for and every yard where a dog can roll in the grass safely traces back to her. She was the start of all of it.

My determination to get chemicals out of our lawns and waterways has never faltered. Losing her has only made that commitment stronger. I’m going to push harder in her honor, for our animals, our families, and the environment we all share.

I’ll end with one of my favorite quotes, that helped when my mom passed as well.

If the same bare spots show up every spring, it’s usually not a coincidence. 🌱

High foot traffic, snow piles, poor drainage, and compacted soil all put extra stress on turf during winter. When snow melts and refreezes in the same areas, moisture gets trapped and soil tightens, leaving roots with less oxygen and room to recover.

When water pools near your foundation, it can refreeze overnight, seep into compacted soil, and slowly create issues you won’t notice until spring. Over time, that pressure can lead to shifting walkways, cracked edges, or water finding its way where it shouldn’t.

When both are planned as a whole, the landscape feels balanced and intentional. Paths guide movement, plantings soften edges, and the space functions well through every season.
