“Flushable” doesn’t mean drain-friendly. It describes how wipes leave your home, not how they move through your pipes. Wipes and paper towels don’t break down like toilet paper, so they can snag and build up along the way.

Keep wipes, paper towels, tissues, cotton balls, dental floss, hair and medications out of the toilet and sink. Put a small lidded bin in the bathroom, and collect cooking grease in a jar to dispose of it in the trash once it cools. For medications, follow the label or ask a pharmacy about take-back options.

Saturday morning, and there’s water by the heater? Take a breath.

Shut off water at the cold-inlet valve above the tank, or use the home’s main shut-off. Turn a gas unit to “pilot” or “off,” or switch off the electric breaker. Smell gas? Leave and call the gas utility from outside, don’t touch switches or use flames.

Use towels or a bucket, move boxes and electrical items away, and don’t stand in water near the unit.

Trace the source: rust streaks, a damp seam, or water from the tank shell can signal a tank leak. A steady drip at the T&P valve or discharge pipe may point to pressure or a valve issue. Wet fittings, the bottom drain valve, or connectors may be the culprit. Condensation on a cold tank in a humid basement can mimic a leak.

Take a photo; note the brand, model, and manufacture date. Don’t reheat an empty tank, leave it off until checked. Water travels, so check staining or a soft floor even if the unit is dry now.
