Fall is all about layers. And we’re not just talking about sweaters

At Discovery Park at Windler, ornamental grasses bring their own mix of texture, movement and seasonal color to this 23-acre community park. From the soft pink hues of Undaunted red muhly grass to the golden tones of Blonde Ambition blue grama and Karl Foerster reed grass, the planting palette adds depth and interest as the seasons change.

A closer look at the details that make a landscape feel different with every season.

Another milestone for Denver’s 5280 Trail!

Congratulations to the Downtown Denver Partnership and the City and County of Denver on breaking ground on the Acoma Street segment, between 10th and 12th Avenues. This will strengthen connections between neighborhoods and open spaces while creating new opportunities for public art, cultural experiences and economic vitality.

Originally envisioned as a new way to experience and navigate Denver, the 5280 Trail draws inspiration from the sense of discovery found on Colorado’s mountain trails. We’re excited to see this vision come to life.

Sharing ideas, revisiting urban transformation and engaging the next generation of landscape architects.

Civitas Principal Scott recently joined students at the Université de Montréal to share insights from his practice and explore how landscape architecture can shape more meaningful urban environments. In the History, Theory, and Practice in Landscape Architecture class, he presented “Engaging People with Nature in Cities: Creating Transformational Change with Intentionality.” While also revisiting the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan with students in a regional studio, reflecting on two decades of progress and lessons learned.

Alongside the lectures, Scott participated in desk critiques and small-group discussions, engaging with students’ ideas and connecting design theory with real-world practice.

A new home for women’s soccer is taking shape in Denver.

Last week, we celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Denver Summit Stadium at Santa Fe Yards, a major milestone for Denver and for the future of women’s sports in the city.

We’re proud to be part of the team bringing this new stadium to life alongside Denver Summit FC, Populous and CAA ICON. We can’t wait to watch this place come to life—and eventually trade our hard hats for scarves.

Congratulations to the entire project team! Read more about the groundbreaking via the link in bio.

The strongest urban places do more than fill a site, they create connections, build momentum and evolve with the communities around them.

Creating places that endure starts with understanding what’s already there: how people move through a space, what a community needs and where there’s opportunity to create something more meaningful. From there, thoughtful, strategic moves can turn underused spaces into destinations that grow and adapt over time.

In our latest blog, Principal Chris Parezo explores this approach to building urban places that create value beyond their property lines and continue to shape the way people experience a place.

From Parking Lot to Place: Williams Village II

We’re excited to see Williams Village II take shape in Boulder, transforming a former strip retail center and parking lot into a vibrant, connected neighborhood. At the heart of the project is a simple idea: what happens when the spaces between buildings are designed as intentionally as the buildings themselves?

Pedestrian paseos, shared-use streets, a central plaza and a rich native landscape will create opportunities to walk, gather and connect with nature. Inspired by the nearby Flatirons, the landscape also integrates stormwater management and habitat-supporting design — creating a public realm that brings people and places together.

Transit infrastructure can be more than a means of getting from one place to another; thoughtful design can make it a meaningful part of the public realm.

In the latest issue of Modern In Denver, Civitas’s Centerra Loveland Mobility Hub is featured for its transformation of a highly utilitarian transit connection into a welcoming and recognizable public space. Working alongside CDOT and project partners, Civitas approached the 300-foot pedestrian underpass and center-loading station with a focus on arrival, orientation, comfort, and safety.

Through daylighting, indirect lighting, color, and illuminated canopies, the project creates a calmer, more intuitive experience for commuters while establishing a distinctive landmark along the I-25 corridor.

Centerra demonstrates how urban design can elevate everyday infrastructure, creating transit spaces that better connect people to place and to one another.

A look at where landscape architecture is headed — and the ideas shaping what comes next.

At last week’s ASLA Conference in Los Angeles, Civitas Founder and Principal Mark Johnson joined an inspiring group of industry leaders for The ASLA Industry Outlook: An Executive Forum on the Future of Landscape Architecture.

From climate and technology to the ways we shape communities and collaborate across disciplines, the discussion underscored just how much opportunity there is to rethink what landscape architecture can be.

As Mark reflected following the discussion: “Landscape architects are clearly having a growing influence and impact. With the profession’s deep understanding of urban and natural systems, cities and culture, landscape architects are uniquely positioned to lead meaningful change against today’s biggest challenges—climate, equity, and health.”

Grateful to ASLA for bringing this group together and to the incredible leaders who continue to push the profession forward.

Great design doesn’t happen in isolation. It grows through collaboration—across disciplines, with clients, and alongside the communities we serve. Our culture is built on listening first, sharing ideas openly, and creating places that reflect the people who use them every day.
