What if art wasn’t the finishing touch, but part of the design strategy from day one?

In her latest article, Genevieve Rogers explores how Tepeyac Community Health Center demonstrates the impact of integrating art into a healthcare facility from the very beginning.

Through a thoughtful collaboration with Jennifer Perlow and PS Art Consulting, the project used art to support intuitive wayfinding, strengthen connections to the Elyria-Swansea community, reinforce organizational identity, and create a more welcoming patient experience.

As Jennifer notes, art in healthcare can help reduce anxiety, provide positive distraction, and help patients feel seen. At Tepeyac, those principles helped shape an environment that reflects both the organization’s mission and the community it serves.

The takeaway? Art isn’t just decoration. When it’s considered early, it becomes a powerful tool that can influence how a healthcare facility functions, feels, and connects with its community.

At Fletcher Miller School, classroom design supports a wide range of behavioral and emotional needs.

Some classrooms are designed with additional considerations to help students who benefit from structured, calming environments. Soft furnishings create comfort, while thoughtfully selected, weighted furniture provides stability and helps maintain a consistent, safe setting.

It’s a quiet but important layer of design that helps every student stay engaged.

In 1974, Stephen King checked into Room 217 at The Stanley Hotel with his wife, Tabitha. The hotel was nearly empty, closing for the season, and King later described it as the perfect, almost archetypal, setting for a ghost story. That one unsettling night became the seed for The Shining, published in 1977.

When Stanley Kubrick adapted the novel for the screen in 1980, he shifted the number—turning King’s real Room 217 into the film’s now-infamous Room 237, home to one of the most talked-about scenes in horror movie history.

On the second floor at the Stanley Caretaker’s Cottage, our team recreated Room 237 in screen-accurate detail, honoring not the Cottage’s own history, but the fictional one the campus inspired. The room includes the instantly recognizable Hicks’ Hexagon carpet pattern, the same red-brown-and-orange design by David Hicks that lined the Overlook Hotel’s hallways on screen.

At Tepeyac Community Health Center, wayfinding is about more than helping people find their destination—it’s about helping them feel comfortable when they get there.

Serving a diverse and historically underserved community, the facility was designed with intuitive wayfinding strategies that use color, material changes, and visual cues to make navigating the building easier and less stressful for patients and families. These small design decisions can have a big impact on patient experience.

For many students, visiting the library is a simple part of the school day. For Hanover Elementary students, it’s something entirely new.

The newly completed Media Center at Hanover Elementary School provides students in Hanover School District 28 with dedicated access to books, technology, and collaborative learning spaces that support exploration and discovery. Designed as a hub for curiosity and creativity, the space offers flexible seating, interactive technology, and welcoming gathering areas where students can read, research, create, and connect.

This media center represents expanded opportunities. Students now have access to resources and learning experiences that many take for granted, all within a bright, modern environment designed to inspire a lifelong love of learning.

Gillete College’s Enzi Applied Learning Center is designed to support hands-on, collaborative education with a diverse mix of teaching and learning environments. The facility includes several large science labs, fabrication labs, and general classrooms, creating flexible spaces where students can explore, experiment, and apply their knowledge in real-world ways.

From STEM instruction and scientific research to fabrication and innovation, these spaces are designed to prepare students for workforce credentials, continued education, and future careers.

Before there was Amazon, there was Sears.

When F.O. Stanley furnished the original Caretaker’s Cottage in the early 1900s, he turned to the same resource countless American households relied on: the Sears Roebuck catalog.

So when MOA ARCHITECTURE set out to bring the Cottage’s first floor back to life, we didn’t guess at the details. The interiors team tracked down an actual 1904 Sears catalog and used it as a design reference — sourcing period-correct replicas and originals to furnish the parlor, dining room, sitting room, and kitchen exactly as they might have appeared over a century ago.

The result is a page pulled straight out of history. Every fixture, every piece, chosen the way F.O. Stanley himself might have chosen it: catalog in hand.

Working alongside Hanover School District 28, MOA helped transform Hanover Elementary into a safer, healthier, and more inspiring place for students to learn and grow.

From a secure entry vestibule that enhances safety to expanded classrooms that provide more room for learning, every aspect of the project was designed with students in mind. The addition of a new media center, kitchen expansion, and outdoor learning courtyard creates opportunities for collaboration, exploration, and hands-on learning both inside and outside the classroom.

Funded through a BEST grant, the project addresses critical needs including safety, air quality, and space, while creating a modern learning environment that will serve students and the community for years to come.
