A Sunday dinner deserves a good place to gather. In this Platt Park home, the dining room sits between the kitchen and living room, with glass doors opening to the backyard.

The Great American B**r Festival is at Levitt Pavilion this weekend. If you’re bringing the gathering back home afterward, this Washington Park lower level has plenty of room.

The bar opens right into the lounge, so everyone can stay together whether they’re grabbing a drink or watching the game. The open stair helps the whole level feel connected to the rest of the house.

This kitchen was planned for two groups at once: whoever’s cooking, and everyone sitting at the island keeping them company.

Black cabinetry wraps the room. White counters keep it from feeling heavy, and the range gets its own wall with a sage-green hood. Four stools with gold legs line the island under a pair of wood-and-white pendants. Around the corner, a pantry with open shelves takes the overflow, and a banquette tucked under the window gives homework or a second cup of coffee somewhere to land that isn’t the island.

Stand at the far end and the sightline runs straight past the island to a tufted white sofa, sage built-ins around the fireplace and the stair beyond. Nobody in the kitchen is ever cut off from the rest of the house.

DIVA opens at the Denver Art Museum today. It's a V&A exhibition about performers who owned every stage they stepped onto, and Denver is its only U.S. stop.

We have a few light fixtures with the same energy. A cascade of brass rods hanging low over a dark dining table, ringed by sculptural white chairs. A single black linear pendant floating above a long oak table and a row of boucle chairs, with three black domes lighting the island behind it. A black lantern hung in front of a tall stair window, the first thing you see on the way up.

Lighting is one of the few design decisions you can see from the street after dark. Which of these gets the spotlight in your house?

The pool gets the attention, but the covered lounge is what keeps this backyard busy once the nights turn cool. A pergola overhead, a fire table in the middle, and the house's glass wall slid open behind it so the living room and the patio become one space.

Across the terrace, a long outdoor dining table sits beside a fireplace with a screen mounted above, and the grill station is a few steps away. Chaises and umbrellas line the pool, which probably has one or two warm weekends left in it this year.

Designing a Denver backyard means designing for the shoulder seasons. Fire, cover and an easy path back inside are what make a space like this useful in October, not just July.

Some people collect art; these homeowners asked for a house that could hold theirs. Mona Lisa over the fireplace. A cowhide lounge chair beside it. A hand-painted coffee table in orange and yellow in front of a coral sofa.

The collection starts at the front door. A red lacquer credenza sits under a grid of pop-art walk signals, with a vase of arrows at one end. A few steps in, a chartreuse dining table stands on a black-and-white striped rug under a brass dome pendant, surrounded by clear acrylic chairs and a wall of steel-framed glass. Built by Caliber in Washington Park, the house keeps its architecture quiet on purpose: white walls, pale oak floors, black steel, so everything else can be loud.

RiNo’s First Friday art walk runs this weekend. Worth the trip. But a sage-green bookshelf holding Kandinsky, Matisse and a stack of yellow phone-number boxes makes a pretty good case for staying in.

Gray brick, dark lap siding, black-framed glass stacked two stories high. The house doesn't try to compete with the season. It just gives it a good backdrop.

If a custom home or major remodel has been sitting in the back of your mind all year, October is a natural point to stop thinking about it and start actually talking about it.
