At Studiobvio (stoo-dee-oh-vee-oh) we collaborate with the best. It's also really important for us to support other local small businesses like ourselves. We have been working with .design.studio on a range of graphic and photographic collaborations (including our website that you should definitely check out!). We were honored that they highlighted Studiobvio in their instagram channel today. Check out their feed for more on the collaboration. We hope you check them out and follow their work. Cheers Typo! Thank you for all you do!

At Studiobvio (stoo-dee-oh-vee-oh) we know that collaboration is hard work, but well worth the effort. It was amazing to see the impressive work from the collaborative teams of Kae Donahue’s students. Congrats to all the students for the rigorous work and the teaching team for a thought provoking prompt and mode of working. Super exiting projects and extra special to see the progress of previous students, including Tucker and Cristian from last semester. Their proposal brought together Latinx graffiti artist and Vietnamese fashion designers in an expressive live work building they proposed for a site at the edge of Dever’s RINO district 🚀

At Studiobvio (stoo-dee-oh-vee-oh) we are honored to get to work with students as they expand their skills and continue to push the agency of architecture as future leaders of this discipline that we love. Congrats to all our students who bravely and confidently presented their work (Bravo to Troy, Litzy, Lexy, Brian, Miles, Khanh, Suzanne, Puncha, Eric, Beau, Dania, and Alycia). A huge thanks our the incredible guest jurors for their probing insights (thank you Kae Donahue, Ben Burghart, Gosia Kung, Katie MacDonald, Peter Zuroweste, and Steve Scribner). Finally, a big shout out to our teaching team (cheers Kevin Hirth and Kaci Taylor) for making the semester such a success.
We will post more images of the student work later but for now a few snaps from the review.

At Studiobvio (stoo-dee-oh-vee-oh) we love animated discussions and debate about how architecture can empower people. At the end of every semester, our students present their design work to visiting guest critics. These moments of punctuation not only provide students the opportunity to get outside feedback on their work from a broader array of professional and disciplinary experts but also the review invites them join into ongoing conversations and debates as equals among peer. We are so proud of their progress and excited for tomorrow discussions.

At Studiobvio (stoo-dee-oh-vee-oh), we love exploring urban spaces as much as we enjoy exploring wild spaces. Over the weekend we attended an open studio art exhibition in the Blue Silo studios within the National Western Stockshow complex and immediately adjacent to the new CSU SPUR campus construction. The studios were the beautiful, iconic , raw, naturally lit, high-ceilinged warehouse spaces craved by artists of every generation in every city. Artists, both the harbinger and ultimately producer of gentrification, too often fall victim to the urban churn that feeds their spaces to developer promising more “productive” (ie profitable) uses.
This reductive and myopic assessment of the value of a space’s “highest and best use” fails to internalize the complex and interrelated social as well as economic (not to mention political, physiological, ecological, emotional, etc etc) values generated by maintaining spaces that are multidimensional, that is to say not flattened the supposedly omniscient lens of the “market”.
As in other systems, the resultant lack of diversity of space results in unexpected vulnerabilities that undermine the value and resiliency of the entire district across all dimensions. Luckily these structures of assessing value are not natural laws but human inventions maintain or changed by individual people. We were happy to learn that both the owners of the building and the broader community leading the development of the district saw the value (not in the profit sense of the term) of keeping the spaces for artists.
We are excited to watch the dynamic of this new district as it continues to evolve with the enduring presence of artists and the heathy diversity of uses and values that strong and resilient stewardship will hopefully maintain.

At Studiobvio (stoo-dee-oh-vee-oh) we take inspiration from place. Sometimes it is more about landscape other times it is more about people. Colorado provides an embarrassment of riches in both. Recently we have started conversations with other local architects that draws inspiration from the amazing people of Colorado Independent Craft Beer industry. There was a time in the recent past when Colorado was not know for its bold, inventive, and delicious beverages. The incredible growth of hundreds of talented local brewers stems from a uniquely collaborative ethos that we believe architecture (and many other industries) could learn a lot from. A lot more on this ongoing conversation soon, but for now… cheers!

At Studiobvio (stoo-dee-oh-vee-oh) we work hard to create a constructive feedback loop with our clients where we present ideas, get feedback, tinker, and represent. Each trip through that loop reveals new possibilities. These two plans of the second story of the pop-top addition are two recent instances of iterations we are working through with our client. The square footage is identical yet the layouts are quite different. Which do you like better? Why?

At Studiobvio (stoo-dee-oh-vee-oh) we leverage many different tools and techniques to represent the unique quality of spaces that we as architects design for our clients. Much of that work is unseen. Here is a quick image (those colors though!) that we exported from a rendering software (an ADU project we are designing) that allows us to easily select different objects or material from the image (in this case both) as we further developed the image in other editing software. It is not what the space will look like but we couldn’t help but share the vibrancy of “the sausage being made”.

At Studiobvio (stoo-dee-oh-vee-oh), we love pizza and Fridays. We have made it a tradition to mix these two glorious things (creative… we know). In the summer and fall we like to add fresh topping from the garden. We just got this new book “Four Season Harvest” by Elliot Coleman after learning about it from the Forest Garden podcast so we are feeling inspired to have fresh toppings year round! Here are a few snaps of recent pies that might inspire you to join us.
