Project Update!

Construction is moving along well at Kentucky Humane Society! All the concrete and drains have been placed, and steel and masonry wall construction is underway.

The 53,000 SF, two-story facility is expected to be completed next year, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to partner with K Norman Berry Associates Architects and bring our animal care design expertise to the project.

The facility includes a large veterinary clinic which will have wellness services for the community, high-volume spay/neuter services, and internal shelter medicine services. Dog housing will include inside/outside runs, and cats will enjoy cat runs and cat colony rooms with attached catios, giving the animals lots of choice for their housing. On the second floor, staff will enjoy comfortable office spaces and a breakroom with access to an outdoor patio.

More updates to come as construction progresses!

A quiet animal shelter? It might sound like an oxymoron, but it's actually a wonderful goal to work toward! 🐾

Last week we had the opportunity to attend the Michigan Pet Alliance One Voice Conference & Expo, and our own Sarah Boman teamed up with Keely Siebein of Siebein Associates, Inc. to give a talk about strategies to reduce noise in animal shelters. It's an important topic, and it's one that we love nerding out about.

Noise is more than a nuisance; it's a quality-of-life issue for shelter animals and the staff who care for them. With thoughtful design and material selection, we can dramatically improve the animal shelter environment for everyone!

Fall is in the air. πŸ‚

What better way to celebrate than doing a leaf-themed art project? Last week, some of our staff gathered together after work to create clay trinket dishes using leaves as molds. A simple concept with beautiful results!

What is Fear Free design? 🐾

This is a question we get asked a lot, and it’s a topic that we love talking about.

For architects, Fear Free design means looking beyond aesthetics and asking how the built environment can support animal well-being, reduce stress, improve workflows, and create better experiences for both people and animals.

In this video, architect Heather Lewis shares a few examples of how we incorporate Fear Free principles into our animal care facility designs.

Now, we want to hear from you. What questions should our architects answer next? Tell us in the comments!

We are so deeply inspired by the amazing work that Niall and Happy Doggo are doing to help street dogs in Thailand and across Southeast Asia.

Tina's Hospital, which is currently being built in Thailand, will allow his team to touch the lives of so many more dogs in need. It has been such an honor for Animal Arts to play a small part in getting the hospital designed and built.

Annual summer party = good food, great conversation, and a little friendly competition! β˜€οΈπŸŽ‰

Our team took a well-deserved break yesterday to enjoy some fun in the sun together. Ice cream was eaten, games were played, and pets were (unsurprisingly) a favorite topic of discussion. We're already looking forward to next year!
