Celebrating the re-opening of East Colfax today by remembering a very early project I did on E. Colfax at Lafayette St.-- redesigning the storefront for Hugh Pitcher's Budget Printing store in 1992. We added a simple wrap-around awning for the corner store. After the renovation of the front areas of the shop I was offered a space at the back of the building to open my first architecture office in an unused garage space complete with skylight, and a loading dock facing south! I was only 32 years old, and the rent was just $75/month. I had access to the printing shop copy machines, and a Mackintosh computer for letters, and graphics. At that time we still draughted all our drawings manually, using black ink "Rapidograph" pens on Mylar sheets. At night time, my work space was transformed into a practice space for our Indy band: "Urban Savannah ". It all started on East Colfax Ave. where small business dreams were still possible.

Nico is a Colorado native has lived and traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Europe and North Africa. An environmental designer, architect and urban planner by training, Nico’s professional specialties are in sustainable design, historic preservation, adaptive re-use, and urban infill development in walkable transit-oriented districts. He founded Environmental Productions as an integrated design practice in Denver in 1993 after his studies and apprenticed with notable architects including fine home designers Kenyon C. Bolton III in Cambridge, Peter H. Dominick Jr., and John Carney II in Denver.
Nico’s favorite residential projects include passive solar houses, accessory dwelling units, live/work spaces, loft studios, and personalized home additions including music rooms, bedroom suites, baths and kitchens. He designs in a range of traditional and contemporary styles fitting and transforming the project design context through new narratives about location, client program, economics and the environment.
Mr. Casewit holds the Masters Degree in Architecture from M.I.T. ; receiving the “AIA School Medal” for his design thesis on Music and Architecture in 1987. Niccolo graduated with special honors from the University of Colorado with a degree in Environmental Design at Boulder; he also attended the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany.

While transit-oriented development (TOD) is usually associated with public transit, I have always seen it as a continuum of multiple modes of transportation; as the armature of our close-knit communities. Why not include Motorcycles? This unusual utilitarian store and shop design features a hybrid pre-manufactured steel building married to the split block masonry elements. Block, stucco, metal panels and aluminum “reyno-bond” building skins were installed on-site cladding the steel frame. The dramatic corner-entry feature takes a literal cue from the trademark Harley Davidson “Twin-Vee” engine block. Generous curtain walls and overhead doors help define building identity/ and functions. The two floors are naturally top lit from above by full length transom windows at the roof. The building was completed in 2005, and has since been converted to a new use as the Nytech Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing headquarters,

We were honored to extend the life of Colorado Academy's Knowles Upper School by a decade as design collaborator and Architect of Record. I teamed up with Mountain Design Group and Burkett Design to add 6 classrooms and refurbish the original ca. 1963 mid-century school. From preliminary concepts, we produced fast-track construction drawings and specifications for six new classrooms, a brand new school entry, sky-lighted atrium, remodeled the bathrooms, expanded administrative offices of the private school building. The total project scope was 28,000 S.F. We designed for the required building code upgrades for the renovation of existing high school at a very reasonable cost. We worked closely with the general contractor and CM, Fransen & Pittman, throughout all phases of design, estimates, contracts and construction. This close collaboration enabled the school to function with minimal disruption and no lost classroom days--construction was mostly completed during the 2-month summer recess. The final result integrated this plain building into the modern design thematic of the entire Colorado Academy Campus. Colorado Academy was then able to eventually phase-in a brand new much larger two-story building a decade later designed by GKK works (now Cannon Design)

Historic Belvidere Theater and Concert Hall, Central City built in 1868--Colorado's oldest opera house ! Sometimes important restoration projects take a quarter-century to gather the steam needed to be successful. Niccolo as the Design Architect , created plans restoring the historic proscenium stage, main entry, staircase. Kenneth LaGreca, Architect and Engineer of Record , Mountain Design Group. With the “The Shady Ladies” of “The City of Central ”, we demonstrated that the long-abandoned theater space could be experienced if only for one night to celebrate New Year's Millineum change-over. Niccolo Casewit- Impresario, directed the production of the first Central City Millennium Celebration. He Organized New Years Fundraiser with Conductor Dr. Horst Buchholz and the Centennial Philharmonic “little' Vienna Chamber Orchestra”, Central City, CO (Mid-Night 1999-2000)

The famous "Denver Tramway Building" was built for the Denver Tramway Companies in 1912 as a street car "barn", with an attached office tower which is now the "Hotel Teatro". Niccolo played an integral part as a member of the Architectural design team led by principal John Carney Jr. FAIA, and Associate Elizabeth Metz AIA with the Urban Design Group/Inc for the original conversion of the University of Colorado-Denver classroom building.
The 3-story building was adapted into classrooms, and administration, rehearsal stages, and studios for the Denver Center National Conservatory Theater, directed by visionary Donovan Marley in the early 1990s, right across the street from the DCPA. Practical but important work helped take the downtown area forward while extending the use of the iconic building.
(For me personally the University building was familiar as I studied Engineering Physics and Calculus in the building, before heading to Boston for grad school at MIT.)

One of my first home design projects as principal of my own firm Environmental Productions in Avon-Vail at Singletree with Beaver Creek resort in the background for Sam Sterling Homes. While the home is situated near the 10th hole of the Singletree luxury golf course, it answered the call with one of the first attached ADU units built in Avon-Vail on a small lot. The 1,000 ft "ski instructors" unit faces the street and also shares the backyard hot tub.

As it turned out, the "Spec." home paid for itself with income generated from the ADU. The half-basement garden level with the split-level entry was economical way to create both adequate living space and privacy between the main part of the house, and the party-wall-ADU.

Mid-century Walk-out Basement conversion to ADU for a family member. This basement transformation was miniaturized in details for simple living. My home in Barnum Park was designed and built by the late well known-school and church architect Carol Lewis for himself and his young family. The home was then purchased in 1958 by my father, a freelance writer, and immigrant refuge from the Shoa, with my mother also an immigrant-refuge of the Cold War. The basement faces the street as the house is built into a hillside. The tiny front space has had many different lives: first, as a small one-car garage, then around 1960 (when I was born) converted to a rustic office space in which my father, Curtis W. Casewit typed-up some 30 published books 1960-2000 ; for a brief period after 2002, I stored my architects files and such; the back room had originally been designed as a photographer' dark room. was then converted into a bedroom and laundry area. In 2009, my mother decided to move from Independent Living and move back after 40 years and live in the same home with me-- but in a newly created private apartment- ADU! The main front space only about 12' x16' allowed everything to be easily within reach from my mother's sofa. She often entertained friends and family including many generations of children in her attached "granny flat."

The task was to design four new town homes to compliment the historic Stevens School condominium conversion originally designed in 1900 by renowned architect Robert S. Roeschlaub--Colorado's first licensed architect. The Stevens School Town homes was an early example of new urban infill in the heart of the Congress Park neighborhood, not far from the Denver Botanic Gardens. The south playground of the school was utilized for the new town homes incorporating a variation of the house forms found in the neighborhood, while also maintaining the pastoral setting. Detached garages were located along the alley. Attention was given to adjacent garden space preserving views of the school from many angles. The over all site development plan presented was by Niccolo and winning approval of multiple zoning variances, revocable permits, and Landmark Preservation Commission approvals from the City of Denver.
