Spring planting is almost here. The Shade Tree Commission along with our DPW will be planting trees to add more beauty to Demarest.

Just in case you've been wondering why trees are being take down around town, it's because of the comprehensive tree inventory which was just completed. Some of the trees were identified as dead or in questionable condition.
Donny Russell and his crew at the DPW were hard at work removing them in record breaking time. His actions have protected us from possible damage caused by storms.
Thank you all.

The Arbor Day Foundation has awarded Demarest recognition as a Tree City USA because we have made planting more trees a priority. Kudos to all those involved

The Shade Tree Commission is beginning to order trees for the spring 2022 planting. If you want a tree please let us know. We have identified sites with overhead wires and will be ordering species that are short at maturity so as not to interfere with the electrical wires. If you receive a notification of our intention to plant in the right of way at your residence and you do not want a tree, it is imperative that you let us know. If you refuse the tree after it has been purchased and after the site has been prepared for planting it is a terrible inconvenience and waste of time and money. Please do your part and let us know if you do not want the tree by responding to the written notice or by calling Lee Campbell at 201-768-0167 ext 130.

BEES NEED OUR HELP
The population of bees around the world has been declining and that effects all of us. In many areas, parasites, a lack of forage, and other factors are threatening bee health and survival. Trees’ flowers are a critical source of forage for bees, providing nutrient-rich pollen and nectar that bees use for food and to make honey.
We can each do a little something to help them by planting trees and flowers that help them survive.
Bees and other pollinators are among the list of important insects, since they move pollen from flower to flower to ensure pollination and the resulting production of many of our most important fruits and vegetables. Our supermarket shelves and dining room tables would look dramatically different if not for pollinators — especially bees.
When considering trees to plant this spring, or perhaps in the fall, try to look for flowering trees. This does not necessarily mean fruit trees, although apples, cherry and plums are all time favorites that will help the pollinators. Other trees that will also add to the beauty of your property and improve the chance for pollinators to survive include Hawthorns, Black Tupelo, Tulip Trees, Serviceberry, and Sourwood.
Check these out on the internet as to size and growing conditions and ask your local nursery if they have these varieties. You may need to place an order since the more unique the tree the less likely you will find it without some help.
The Shade Tree Commission will be adding several of these species to our plantings this year. Remember, if you want a tree planted in the Right of Way in front of your residence you can request one from Lee Campbell at Borough Hall. 201-768-0167 extension 130.

As a reminder, no tree(s) are permitted to be cut down anywhere on your property without an inspection and an approved tree permit removal application. For more info, call Lee Campbell at (201)-768-0167 ext. 130

We at the Shade Tree Commission are proud and pleased to welcome you to the new page for the Demarest Shade Tree Commission. Using this site we will be much better able to inform you as to our programs and ongoing work to keep Demarest green and beautiful.
For starters, for the first time in over 25 years we have had a full inventory of all the trees in what is called the town’s right of way. As a result of this survey we have identified and located trees that are no longer living and that are in need of pruning or removal. The commission will be working with the County, Orange and Rockland and the Department of Public Works to accomplish this work.
If you see lots of trees coming down, don’t panic. We intend to plant about 60 trees this year, some in the spring and some in the fall. It is our intention to find “the right tree for the right place”. Trees that will be planted under the electrical wires will be chosen for their height as well as their beauty so as to minimize threats to the power lines due to storms. We hope to plant those in the spring. In the fall it is our intention to plant taller trees that will provide more shade and habitat for wildlife.
We hope to begin grinding down the stumps left by previous removals. Once those have been removed we will have additional sites for new plantings.
The Commission has once again applied for seedlings which we hope to give to residents at our Arbor Day Festival in April. Last year we gave out 75 seedlings, dogwoods and spruces. We’re looking forward to hearing how well they did over the winter months.
Please like us on Facebook and make use of the site for up to date information and to share your opinions as to how we’re doing and what you think our priorities should be.
