Everyone wants to talk about the colors, patterns, and borders of their new pool deck or driveway. But after 35 years in this business, I’m going to let you in on a secret:
The prettiest pavers in the world won’t mean a thing if your installer cuts corners on the prep work. ❌
When a paver patio sinks, shifts, or grows a jungle of weeds in 2 years, it’s almost never a failure of the stone itself. It’s a failure of the foundation. In South Florida, our sandy soil and intense tropical storms will expose a bad base faster than anywhere else.
Before you hire a contractor for your next project, make sure you ask them these 3 non-negotiable questions:
1️⃣ “How deep are you excavating, and what is your base material?”
If they aren’t digging down to clear out organic soil and using a properly compacted gravel base, your pavers will shift within a couple of seasons.
2️⃣ “How are you handling the drainage and underground lines?”
Around a pool, you have skimmers, returns, and plumbing. A true expert updates old couplings and ensures the grading slopes away from your home, not toward it.
3️⃣ “Are you using standard sand or polymeric sand for the joints?”
Standard sand washes away in the first heavy rain. Polymeric sand hardens like glue to lock the pavers together and block weeds.
Experience isn’t just about how fast a job gets done; it’s about knowing exactly what it takes to make a project last for the next 30 years. 🛠️
