The Sioux River Red Rock Trail in Dell Rapids, South Dakota, was created in a cooperative effort between a committee of local residents and the City of Dell Rapids. Construction on the first segment of recreational trail, circling City Park, began in 2010. Since then the trail has been extended along the Big Sioux River to link the ball fields, scenic overlook, the dam, and western neighborhoods a
ll the way to Golfview Drive near the golf course. One recent extension includes a half-mile hiking trail loop west of the dam in the southwest corner of Dells. It travels through an area of woods, quartzite rock formations, and natural prairie that is popular with local fisherman and hikers. The local garden club has made efforts to reestablish natural prairie wildflowers, creating scenery with an ever-changing palette. From 2023-2025, trail planning and construction is underway to make the stretch of Old Highway 77 from 4th to 15th St. safer for pedestrians and bicyclists by adding separate paths along the road and well-defined lighted crosswalks.
