🥜 There’s still a little more digging to do in the peanut patch!

Ruby 🚜 and her grapple really helped save me some time during the harvest, but the tractor couldn’t reach every spot along the edges.

I’ll be going back through those areas by hand and checking the dirt to see if any peanut plants got buried along the way. 🌱

You just never know what might still be hiding in the garden!

Lessons Learned and Peanuts Earned: Harvest Time on the Homestead 🥜🌱

From switching implements on Ruby 🚜 to hand-picking peanuts for nearly three hours, this year's harvest taught us plenty. Come along and see how three wheelbarrows of peanut plants turned into a 5-gallon bucket of peanuts! 🤠

🥜 Wait… peanuts grow like THIS?

Fresh from the garden! 🌱

Today we’re picking peanuts by hand, one by one, straight from the plant. It’s one of those harvests that reminds you just how incredible nature really is.

Did you know? Peanuts aren’t actually nuts—they’re legumes, making them cousins to beans and peas!

Now that the harvest is in, it’s time for our favorite part…

🌶️ Homemade Cajun boiled peanuts. There’s nothing quite like taking something from the garden and turning it into a meal to share with family.

🥜 We finally got to see what was hiding beneath the soil…

Today we dug our first peanuts of the season and harvested 5 pounds from about two dozen plants. It’s always exciting to finally see what’s been growing beneath the soil after months of waiting.

One tool we highly recommend is a roofing fork instead of a traditional pitchfork. Roofing forks are built stronger, making them less likely to bend or break when digging peanuts. You can usually find one in the roofing section at your local hardware store.

The rest of the peanut patch is a little too much to dig by hand, so Ruby, our trusty red tractor 🚜, will be taking over the heavy lifting for the rest of the harvest.

Unfortunately, the thunder started rolling in before we could finish, so we’ll be back in the patch later this week to dig the rest.

💬 Before you scroll… take a guess! How many pounds of peanuts do you think the rest of the patch will produce? Drop your guess in the comments, and we’ll reveal the total after the next harvest!

EDIT: Congratulations Dixie McIntyre; final tally is 23 lbs. After boiling them, I was able to put away seven 1/2 gallon bags. I’ll post the recipe I used, along with a recipe for the Instant Pot. 🥜🥜 🥜

It’s that time of the year, the garden is starting to come in. So far, things are going well, but the bugs aren’t out yet!🫣🥺 Today, I was able harvest some zucchini, straight neck squash, sweet banana peppers, poblano and basil.
I made some appetizers with the basil. All it takes is some cubed up mozzarella cheese, cherry tomatoes (not mine, yet), basil, balsamic glaze, salt and some toothpicks. I start with a tomato, then basil, cheese, repeat! After they’re made, I drizzle balsamic glaze all over them and sprinkle some salt on them!
