Today we are going to showcase a family of plants that may make even the mild arachnophobe break out in a cold sweat: the SPIDERWORTS (genus:Tradescantia)! 🕷️

These lovely prairie dwellers boast an array of purples from blue to fuchsia and bloom in the late spring to early summer, providing a pop of color in between the delicate spring ephemerals and all those hardy summer showstoppers. They have a tendency to open their blooms in the morning sun and close during the afternoon heat, allowing them to prolong their bloom time in your gardens and prairies!

Spiderworts are a favorite of pollinators🐝, are deer resistant🦌, and can do generally well in landscaped areas (though they may tend to spread if they are healthy and happy)! 🤗

Stone Silo Prairie Gardens has a variety of Tradescantia in stock, including the Ohio Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis), Prairie Spiderwort (Tradescantia bracteata), and Western Spiderwort (Tradescantia occidentalis).

🚨LAST CALL for spring ephemerals and plants in 2” pots!!!🚨

We will be planting back our spring ephemerals (because who wants to buy a pot of dirt with a sleeping 😴 plant 🌱 in it 🤣), so this will be your last chance to add those beautiful early bloomers to your garden for this year!

We will also be removing our plants in 2” pots from the sale benches within the next week due to the stress of the summer heat 🥵. These little guys are a bargain at $3 ea., so make sure to stop by and grab an armful before they’re gone for the season!

There are so many reasons why we love Butterfly W**d (Asclepias tuberosa), probably too many to list here - but we’ll try anyway!

🦋Butterfly W**d, also known as Orange Milkweed, is a critical food source for pollinators - most notably the monarch butterfly, for which it is a larval host!🦋

🦋The mid-summer blooming flowers boast an unmatched bright orange hue, making it a superstar in any garden setting! 🤩

🦋Fun Fact: This plant was historically “Pleurisy Root” because Native Americans consumed it to treat pleurisy and other pulmonary ailments! 🩻

This beauty is always one of our 🏆top sellers🏆 and we have a limited quantity left in stock, so make sure to stop by soon and grab yours!

The Great Indian Plantain (Arnoglossum reniforme) is, simply put, a behemoth 😯 and that’s why we LOVE it! 🌱

This magnificent plant can reach heights of 8 feet tall! (Yes, *8* feet-not a typo!) As such, its flower clusters are massive at 5-12 inches wide, and its leaves can reach a whopping 15 inches in width! 😱😱😱

The late summer blooms attract an entire laundry list of pollinators 🐝🐞🦋 and the foliage is not generally preferred by deer 🦌🙌 (no offense, deer).

Most importantly, this Midwest native is considered threatened in several states, including neighboring Minnesota.

We have a number of these big beauties in stock, but as always, supplies are limited so make sure to stop by and grab yours soon! 🏃‍♂️

The Black Chokeberries are officially in stock at Stone Silo Prairie Gardens!

The Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa var. elata) is a showy spring-blooming shrub whose benefits extend to insect pollinators, birds and even humans ‼️

The white/pink flowers bloom in May and are a pollinator magnet! 🐝

The berries emerge in fall and are a favorite of birds and people alike! 🦅👩‍🌾🫐

🙌FUN FACT🙌 When eaten fresh, the aronia berries have an astringent effect, which creates an extremely dry sensation in the mouth - hence the nickname “chokecherries”!

However☝️, when dried or cooked, the aronia berries have a wonderful flavor and have been used by indigenous people in culinary settings for centuries! 👩‍🍳🫐

This shrub boasts an impressive height of 5-8 feet, and a spread of 6-10 feet 📏🤩 and prefers medium wet soils 💧, and can tolerate full-sun to part-shade. ☀️⛅️ It is a stellar option for rain gardens and hedges. ⭐️

We have a limited number of Black Chokeberry shrubs in stock ($40 ea.), so make sure to get yours before they’re gone! 🏃‍♂️
