Thinking about spending $5K–$10K on a custom closet? Before you do, here’s what I’d want you to know. 👇

A great closet isn’t the one with the MOST storage packed onto every wall. It’s the one designed around what you actually own and how you use the space.

Here’s where I’d prioritize your budget:

1. Design around your wardrobe.
How much do you hang? How much long-hang space do you need? What about shoes, bags, folded clothes and accessories? Your belongings should determine the layout—not a predetermined package.

2. Choose a good mix of storage.
Drawers, adjustable shelving, double-hang sections, long-hang space and dedicated shoe storage will usually serve you better than simply adding more shelves.

3. Don’t forget lighting + electrical.
A beautiful closet can still feel dated if it’s dark. Better lighting—and strategically placed outlets—can completely change how the space functions.

4. Budget for the ROOM, not just the organizer.
Paint, flooring, drywall, trim and crown molding can be what takes a closet from looking like an installed organization system to feeling truly finished and built-in.

And here’s the big one: you don’t necessarily need fully custom cabinetry to get a custom look. Thoughtful design + the right finishing details can give you a beautiful result without putting your entire budget into cabinetry.

If I had $25,000 to invest in a kitchen, I’d focus on the upgrades that deliver the biggest improvement in both function and appearance—without the cost, disruption, and downtime of replacing all the cabinetry.

Here’s where I’d prioritize the budget:

✨ New quartz countertops
✨ A full-height backsplash (taking the tile all the way up instantly elevates the space)
✨ Cabinet rollouts and organizational accessories to make every cabinet work harder
✨ Updated lighting to brighten the space and add personality
✨ New flooring for a cohesive, fresh look
✨ A new sink and faucet
✨ New cabinet hardware

Will every one of these fit into a $25K budget? That depends on your kitchen size and the materials you choose. But these are the upgrades that typically provide the best balance of ROI, everyday function, and visual impact.

One thing many homeowners don’t realize is that cabinetry is often the single largest expense in a kitchen remodel—and replacing it also creates the longest disruption.
