2. Turn on Fraud Alerts
If you aren't ready to do a full freeze, or if you want an extra layer of defense, you should activate a fraud alert.
* How it protects you: A fraud alert forces businesses to verify your identity (usually by calling you directly) before they can issue any new credit in your name.
* Bonus tip: When you place a fraud alert with Equifax, they are legally required to notify the other two major credit bureaus (Experian and TransUnion) to do the same.
