NEW VIRUS: Scientists in China identify a previously unknown tick-borne virus in more than 1 in 10 patients bitten by ticks.

The Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV) causes flu-like illness, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms and reduced blood platelet counts.

Patients infected with both ALTNV and a second tick-borne virus had kidney complications and respiratory issues — and 18.4% of those co-infected patients died during the study.
