The stuff nobody sees in the finished photos. 🏗️

Princess Anne's course is wrapped by 82 occupied homes and cut through by seven roads — and it sits just a few feet above sea level. That meant some work could only happen at low tide, holding the grade with four lasers running at once. No room for error with homes on every side!

Princess Anne Country Club, Virginia Beach — one of the region's most beautiful and challenging courses. After 25 years without a major renovation, over 125 members stepped up to fund a full reconstruction in 2007, because they wanted their course back.

Anatomy of a Bunker 🏌️⛳

Ever wonder what actually goes into rebuilding a golf course bunker? Take a look, step by step — starting with stripping everything back to bare earth, then new drainage to prevent future washouts, a fresh liner before any sand goes back in, and finally crisp edges and fresh sand to finish it off.

We usually only show you the finished product — the pretty stuff, all crisp white sand and perfect edges. 👀

But today we're pulling back the curtain on what actually goes into getting there.

This is Hole 7 at Firestone Country Club's South Course, back in 2010, mid-renovation. Aspen partnered with the Fazio Group on a full bunker rebuild across the whole course — new drainage, new liners, and a lot of dirt before it ever looked this good.

Another look at Hudson National Golf Club — this course has no shortage of dramatic, elevated holes, like this one with sweeping views of the Hudson River and surrounding hills.

Fun fact: this course is so photogenic that one of its holes appears on the cover of legendary architect Tom Fazio's own book, "Golf Course Designs." 📖⛳

Proud to have worked on this course back in 2010, helping renovate 80 bunkers throughout.

From the archives: Hudson National Golf Club. 🏌️⛳

Notice a theme? Just like the Country Club of Buffalo post earlier this week, this course also works with the natural rock terrain rather than around it.

Back in 2010, Aspen partnered with Tom Marzolf of Fazio Golf Design on a renovation — including rebuilding 80 bunkers and adding 6 new ones — that helped the course climb Golf Digest's Top 100 rankings in America, from #94 to #83.
