A well-designed garden can evolve without losing its identity.

At this Highland Park French traditional residence, the evergreen borders, planters, and formal layout create a framework that remains consistent even as the planting changes.

Whether filled with bright color or a softer white palette, the entry garden continues to feel connected to the architecture and true to the character of the home.

For this residence, the garden was designed to complement the architecture and create a more intentional arrival toward the home.

The formal hedging helps guide the way forward, while gravel paths, flowering borders, and fountain views introduce seasonal color and a more relaxed garden character. Around the property, the front garden gives way to narrower side paths, where planting and water features create smaller discoveries along the way.

Every project begins with a close look at the architecture.

For this residence, the early concept explores how planting, texture, and vertical greenery can frame the façade while still preserving its character. Sketching allows us to study proportion, rhythm, and the relationship between the home and the surrounding landscape before the design moves into further development.

A first glimpse at a project currently in progress.

This poolside garden room creates a beautiful transition from the architecture into the landscape.

The green-drenched interior speaks to the planting just beyond the arched openings, allowing the room and garden to feel visually connected. From inside, the layered hedges frame the view outward while creating a sense of privacy, revealing just enough to invite you further.

Beyond the hedges, the pool is partially hidden, turning the walk outside into a sequence of layered spaces that slowly unfold as you move through them.

The role of seating in the landscape

A bench at the end of a garden path, chairs beside a terrace, or a group of seats around a fire all change the way a space is experienced. They invite people to pause, gather, look outward, or enjoy a quieter corner of the property.

When seating is considered as part of the initial design process, it helps shape circulation, views, scale, and the way each outdoor space is used.

The power of a well-designed outdoor space is that it creates places people want to spend time in.

What appears first as a planted edge as you walk down the stairs gradually reveals another side.
From the upper level, seasonal flowers frame the view toward the house. From below, the opposite face becomes a fountain, bringing texture, sound, and another layer of interest to the arrival.

This classic European-inspired house sets the tone for the arrival and front yard design. For this project, the landscape was composed in layers that read as one complete picture, helping visually connect the street to the front door despite the long approach.

Brick entry piers mark the first threshold and frame the main walkway, drawing the eye inward from the street.

Low planting preserves clear views of the house while adding depth, texture, and seasonal interest across the front yard. At the entry, taller planters frame the door and give the final approach a stronger sense of focus.

In this proposal, different terrace levels were designed to bring more dynamism to the backyard while maximizing the water view.

These levels create multiple outdoor living spaces, along with a pool that begins at the upper terrace and appears to extend toward the sea. Together, they shape a layered experience that strengthens the relationship between the house, the landscape, and the view.
