Lahina - completely devastated by the fire. Some new rebuilds are happening and a few tiny houses. I have to say what is being built back is affordable, simple, honestly a lost opportunity to refine context, regionally appropriateness and sustainability.

From sunset over the surf to volcanoes and cliff diving, Hawai’i is dynamic for sure - Maui is 4 million years older than the big island so tropical the Big Island is a shield volcano surrounded by lava rock fields were the force of nature is slowly terra forming the landscape. Funny though. The resorts are oasis’s spotted around the lava coasts - Disney like places in stark contrast to the raw volcanic landscape. Cold rain forests at 4,500 elev.

Something special about growing your own food. Organic rhubarb - pie time and second green bean picking. Besides the beautiful color and shape the fresh fragrance and taste right off the plant is extraordinary.

Haven’t posted lately - busy restructuring the practice. Finally decided on some R&R. Slipped away to HI and witnessed the eruption in the Big Island at Volcanoes National Park. To think that we are living on this thin crust of living biosphere floating on a ball of molten magma. Thus far HI is some 400 - 600 acres bigger!

Our visit to see Milan’s Bosco Verticale, two residential towers in Porto Nuova absolutely blew us away. Not only are they breathtaking, but they made us feel notably calmer, and the air sweeter just by being in their presence. Situated at BAM, Biblioteca degli Alberi Milano, a ten hectare park and garden, residents are connected to nature at every turn. The neighborhood is also an extraordinary example of how the City of Milan has melded innovative contemporary architecture with an historic, ancient city. Milan as a whole was notably greener than Florence, as they have parks and green space integrated into most city blocks, versus keeping a few gardens sequestered at the edge of the city.

The vision for the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch is really taking form. We oriented the facility to integrate the native prairie up onto the North side of the building. The berm will nestle the building into the native landscape to become a feature in the prairie, rather than an intrusion. We are wrapping the building in quail habitat, while opening up the South to daylight and shading the front of the building like the live oak trees immediately in front of it.

The Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch is growing organically out of the West Texas Prairie. The building wk be very close to ZNE - Zero Net Energy construction and it can stand up to the harsh W TX climate. We are utilizing Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) which brings out its ZNE performance. The building is also passive solar orientation, facing South, so it will be almost entirely day-lit, so they will rarely need to turn on the lights, even in the North side which will get diffused light.
