Ah yes Spurge. It's either the first or second most common w**d this time of year and an absolute eyesore.
First lets identify it! It's actually pretty unique. By far the most common variety here are spotted and prostrate spurge. Here are a few pictures of each. They have rounded leaves and are low spreading growers.
They are very easy to pull and that is an effective method of control. Be careful though as by the time you can see them they are likely already seeding on near their leaves. Pulling usually dislodges seed and the cycle starts over. If you do pull, the best way is to pull gently as low as you can on the plant and immediately bag the w**d. Some people are also sensitive to the milky sap of Spurge and it can irritate the skin.
Several herbicides also work very well on Spurge. This time of year Celsius is the best because it is the safest in hot weather. Other options are MSM, Sulfentrazone and Fluroxpyr. Be very careful applying any of these. Make sure to read the labels, apply at the correct rates and make sure the weather is cool enough to not cause turf injury!
For the last couple of years I have started putting a preemergent for it down in June that contains the active ingredient Isoaxben and it is highly effective. While it won't provide 100% control, I have seen spurge reduced 80-90% on the lawns I have treated with it and that's a big win. The downside is its fairly expensive so it just depends how high your tolerance for the w**d is vs your pocketbook. For me it's worth the cost.
