I had a little fun creating this animated video to show what goes into building a retaining wall that lasts.

A retaining wall isn’t just a stack of blocks. The right base preparation, drainage, reinforcement, backfill, and compaction all matter. Cutting corners on any of these can lead to leaning, cracking, washouts, and expensive repairs.

After more than 35 years in the retaining-wall industry, I put that field experience into my book, Retaining Walls That Work: A Practical Field Guide to Design, Drainage, and Construction.

BIG CANOE — COMPLETE.

From Day 1 to the final block.

This video tells the story better than words ever could. It starts where we started and follows the transformation all the way through to the finished project.

Three retaining walls.
Approximately 1,500 square feet of wall.
Massive excavation.
Geogrid reinforcement.
Truckload after truckload of backfill.
Countless lifts of compaction.
Engineering, testing, drainage, grading—and a whole lot of hard work.

There were rain delays, difficult soils, excavation challenges and plenty of logistics to work through along the way. But we kept moving forward.

Today, we can finally stand back and look at the finished product.

The scale of these walls is hard to appreciate until you see them from the front—and even harder to appreciate without seeing everything that went into building them from the ground up.

That’s why I put this montage together.

From the first excavation to the final block.

I’m extremely proud of what our crew accomplished on this one.

Built right. Built to last. Built to outlast.

Not every day on a retaining wall project is about stacking block.

Today’s focus was on what most people never see—but what makes the difference between a wall that lasts and one that fails.

Truckload after truckload of engineered backfill…
Lift after lift…
Compaction after compaction…

Every layer is placed, compacted, and verified before moving on. That’s the foundation of a retaining wall built to perform for decades.

This 6-minute drone video gives you a bird’s-eye view of the process and the incredible scale of the Big Canoe project. Seeing all three walls from above really puts this job into perspective.

The finished wall gets all the attention, but it’s the work behind the wall that earns our reputation.

Built right. Built to last.

Some projects are just too big to appreciate from the ground…

This morning’s drone flight over our Big Canoe retaining wall project really puts the size of this job into perspective. From the air, you can finally see how all three walls tie together and just how much earth they’re retaining.

Every block, every lift of backfill, and every layer of geogrid is part of a system designed to perform for decades—not just look good on day one.

We’re proud of the progress our crew has made, and we’re excited to share a view that most people never get to see.

This is why I invested in a drone—to give you a better look at the craftsmanship, planning, and engineering that go into every Armored Earth project.

Built to last. Built by Armored Earth.

Big Canoe retaining wall progress update!

This video gives a look at all three walls from both the front and the back. Seeing them from the front really shows the true scale of this project and just how massive these walls are.

The main wall only has about 8–10 feet left to go before we reach final height. It’s impressive to see how far it has come and how all three walls are starting to tie together.

You’ll also see the soil engineer performing compaction testing behind the wall. Proper backfill placement, moisture control, and compaction are critical on a wall of this size. The parts of a retaining wall you can’t see are often just as important as the finished face.

I also mention my book, Retaining Walls That Work, where I explain the proper construction methods, drainage, reinforcement, and details that help retaining walls perform for years to come.

Built right from the ground up.

🔥💪Day 1 on Wall B at Big Canoe

We made solid progress today, getting Wall B up five courses while the excavator worked behind us backfilling the wall.

In the video, I’m also pointing out where this wall will eventually top out at approximately 25 feet tall. The final street view gives a good look at the overall progress and shows why Wall C is still unfinished. Wall C still has about 10 feet left to go, but we have to bring Wall B up first so the excavation, backfill, and installation can continue safely and efficiently.

This is a massive retaining wall system, and every wall has to come together in the right sequence.

Day 2 progress at the Zaxby’s retaining wall project in Belton, South Carolina.

Day 1 was mostly spent excavating and preparing the footing, while dealing with a delayed block delivery that didn’t arrive until around 4:00 p.m.

Today, we were finally able to start installing block and making visible progress on this 180-foot retaining wall.

The first day may not always look impressive on camera, but proper excavation and base preparation are what make the rest of the wall possible.

Now the wall is starting to take shape.
