This was an interesting felling. The tree was a mature hackberry with a broad canopy and several heavy stems, a few of which leaned back toward the house. We had a nice wide lane to fell it into, but the challenge of some cracking in the lower trunk, which indicated the tree might fall apart into three pieces, mid-fell. Additionally, one of the cracks was positioned and ran low enough to where we'd have to meet it with our saw in either the face (notch) or the backcut, if we didn't leave it in the middle of the hinge. None of those options were very enticing.
Our preparations included capturing multiple of the tree's stems with a single pull line, and being especially careful to include the rear-most (house-leaning) stems. We also tightened a ratchet strap around the entire lower trunk, to hold together what we thought might become three large pieces before they hit the ground. Lastly, we made the decision to keep the crack in the hinge, which ended up working fine, and probably better than the other options would have.
There was a brief moment of excitement as we began to pull the tree over and saw these huge pieces reveal themselves as independent of each other, while they were still completely vertical! But between our pull line, our ratchet strap, and our well-placed cuts, within a few seconds the whole thing was on the ground as you see it here, safe and sound.
We love felling trees, by the way. And our clients tend to love how much less expensive felling is, generally speaking, than the alternatives of a climbing or a crane removal.
