ISA Certified Arborist Andy Eckert, 44, of Culpeper Tree Service, is feeling happy that his smaller chain saw broke down rather early in his climb last Wednesday.

Eckert, a Culpeper County resident, undertook the climb to prepare the pictured back-leaning 34" diameter white oak tree for felling in a confined space.

Andy reports having achieved "incredible gains" from the climb, the likes of which he would have forgone had he not been forced to finish the job with his Stihl MS 462 with 28" bar. 🤗😬😮‍💨

Had kind of a cool photo opportunity as we finished felling this red oak near sunset one day last week. We left the stump 4 feet high so our client could continue leaning a sign against it.

(Don’t miss our FREE offer below)

If you have a large dead tree on your property that’s concerning you, do not despair! 🙂

1) If you want to avoid completely removing your tree, but need to somehow lower the risk it poses to your house, garage, play area, etc., we may have some interesting options for you — like removing just enough of the tree to get it out of range of the targets of concern, then constructing a wildlife habitat in the standing portion that remains! Accordingly, we're offering a FREE wildlife habitat build to the FIRST person who pays us for partial removal of a safely climbable tree. That's a $560 value!

2) *Tree felling* is often a surprisingly affordable service, especially when you don’t need us to haul away the downed materials. Depending on its location and surroundings, we may be able to safely fell your large tree, get all of its materials flat on the ground, and cut the trunk into firewood rounds, for a *small fraction* of what it would cost you to remove the same tree with climbers, a bucket truck, or a crane.

Give us a call or send a text to 540-547-1031 if there’s a tree on your property that you’d like us to look at. And don’t forget about our wildlife habitat build offer!

Several factors combined to make it very clear this tree was not to be trusted. Thankfully our client had us out to take a look, and we were able to bring it down safely and eliminate the risk it posed to his beautiful new home.

Our suspicions about the internal crack were substantiated when we saw the trunk in cross-section (third photo), once the tree was on the ground.

In addition to being ISA Certified Arborists, all four owners of Culpeper Tree Service are ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. Message us on Facebook or call us at 540-547-1031, if you'd like us to take a look at a tree on your property.

Some photos from last September's game of "eastern white pine dominoes."🙂

With the right trunk leaning significantly toward our client's house, we didn't want to fell the left trunk first, independently, and then have to pull the right one all the way over the top by itself. While that *probably* would have been fine, "probably" is unacceptable when there's a house at stake.

Instead, we wanted the option of using the left trunk's weight and momentum to es**rt the right trunk out of its unfavorable lean and onto the intended fall path. So we captured both of them with a single running bowline (think "lasso") about 40 feet up, and secured the other end of that rigging line to a Maasdam come-along device across the property. Then we captured the left trunk by itself with a second rigging line, and tied its other end to a different Maasdam.

The game was rigged in our favor!

Notch the left trunk, notch the right. Careful with the back cuts. Use the first Maasdam to slowly creep the right trunk to 12-o'clock, capturing its progress with felling wedges. Finalize both hinges to set the trunks right up against their tipping points.

Crank first on the two-trunk Maasdam, then on both simultaneously, and watch the dominoes fall.

It's never ideal to make this large of a pruning cut, but in this case we had no choice. This now-missing entire limb snapped off in a recent storm, and our task was to clean it up.

We made this pruning cut just outside the branch collar, which is the right place to make it not only for aesthetic reasons, but also to preserve what arborists call the "branch protection zone." Branch protection zones serve to limit if not prevent the spread of decay from limbs and branches into a tree's trunk.

However, when a given limb or branch is greater than 60% of the diameter of the trunk, as was the case here, a branch protection zone may not exist at all, or if it does exist, probably does so only to a limited extent.

So while we made the best of an unfortunate situation here, ideally this pine tree would have undergone structural pruning years ago to, among other tasks, remove this now-missing limb when it was much smaller.

If you have a tree on your property with a limb that's currently a problem, or that you think might become one if left untended, message us here on Facebook, or call us at 540-547-1031 to arrange for a free, no-obligation consultation and estimate.

This was an interesting felling. The tree was a mature hackberry with a broad canopy and several heavy stems, a few of which leaned back toward the house. We had a nice wide lane to fell it into, but the challenge of some cracking in the lower trunk, which indicated the tree might fall apart into three pieces, mid-fell. Additionally, one of the cracks was positioned and ran low enough to where we'd have to meet it with our saw in either the face (notch) or the backcut, if we didn't leave it in the middle of the hinge. None of those options were very enticing.

Our preparations included capturing multiple of the tree's stems with a single pull line, and being especially careful to include the rear-most (house-leaning) stems. We also tightened a ratchet strap around the entire lower trunk, to hold together what we thought might become three large pieces before they hit the ground. Lastly, we made the decision to keep the crack in the hinge, which ended up working fine, and probably better than the other options would have.

There was a brief moment of excitement as we began to pull the tree over and saw these huge pieces reveal themselves as independent of each other, while they were still completely vertical! But between our pull line, our ratchet strap, and our well-placed cuts, within a few seconds the whole thing was on the ground as you see it here, safe and sound.

We love felling trees, by the way. And our clients tend to love how much less expensive felling is, generally speaking, than the alternatives of a climbing or a crane removal. If you have a tree on your property that makes you nervous, or for whatever reason you just want it gone, don't hesitate to have us come out for a free consultation and estimate. You can contact us here on Facebook, or by calling us at 540-547-1031.

A client of our sister company, Charlottesville Tree Service, recently built this swing set for his kids, so we were happy to see that a very flexible hackberry tree absorbed most of the pine tree’s weight, and damage to the swing set was minimal.

We started our work within 24 hours of the client’s request, and we were able to dismantle and clean up both trees, without further damage to the swing set, in less than 3 hours.
