End of a burn day.

Burn season here runs roughly October through May, and the weather windows inside it are narrow. We need the right wind direction, the right humidity, and a smoke forecast that keeps it off the highway and off your neighbors.

Before a single drop of fuel comes out of a torch, we cut line.

A firebreak is bare mineral soil with nothing on it that will burn. Plowed, disked, or bladed depending on the ground. That line is what the fire backs into and dies on.

We build them around the whole unit, and we tie them into roads, creeks, and anything else that will hold.

Most escaped burns are not a fire problem. They are a line problem.

Same kind of stand. Before, and after.

The first photo is what builds up when fire has been kept out. Waist high brush, heavy leaf litter, a ladder of fuel running from the ground straight up into the tree crowns.

The second is what it looks like after we have been through it. Open floor, grass coming back, and nothing left to carry a fire up into the canopy.

A wildfire in the first stand is a crown fire that kills your timber. In the second it is a grass fire you can walk up to.

That is the difference, and it is the entire reason to burn.

Diesel and gasoline mixed to a specific ratio, a wick, and a spout designed so the flame cannot travel back up into the can. Simple tool, and the entire burn depends on how it gets used.

Where you walk, how fast, and how much you lay down decides whether the fire creeps or runs. Two people with the same torch on the same tract can get completely different fire behavior.

That is experience, and it is most of what you are paying for.

That is the whole job. Not a big impressive wall of fire. A slow, controlled one that does the work and then goes out where we told it to.

Anybody can light a woods on fire. Getting it to stop is the part you hire out.

We put fire on the ground on purpose, and we keep it where it belongs.

Prescribed burning, fuel reduction, mulching, firebreak construction, and wildfire prevention work across Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Timber tracts, hunting leases, pasture, and the ground right behind your house.

Prescribed fire during the growing season is a powerful but underused forest-management tool in the Southeast. By more closely mimicking natural fire regimes, growing-season burns can improve control of hardwood competition and support the development of high-quality wildlife habitat.

Growing-season burns can be an important part of a long-term management strategy. They can help restore fire-adapted ecosystems and improve forest health. These burns can also strengthen resilience, enhance biodiversity, and support wildlife populations.

For Alabama landowners and land managers, growing-season fire can improve the effectiveness of a prescribed fire program. Burns should only be conducted when conditions are appropriate and management objectives align.

Timing is everything when it comes to prescribed burning. Depending on your conservation goals, a spring, summer, fall, or winter burn might be best for you.

*It it generally recommended to avoid management activities during primary nesting season (April 15 - July 15). However, a smaller burn on a partial acreage, while leaving plenty of nesting and brood-rearing habitat, will not detrimentally impact upland bird populations.
