As our “main” season winds down (there is no longer an “off” season in the pool business), we took time as a team to regroup from the challenges of 2022 and look forward to next year. A two day camping retreat in the Berkshires complete with hiking, beautiful views, waterfalls, charitable weather, planting some letterboxes (happy to explain that for anyone interested), short ribs, cupcakes, and lots of laughs was a good way to mark the seasonal transition for the Atlantis team. We have lots of good ideas to work on over the winter and make 2023 the best year yet!

A sincere and heartfelt thank you to everyone that donated to the Out of the Darkness walk! We raised almost $8,000 for this important cause due to the kindness and generosity of our Atlantis family. The well-wishes we’ve received throughout this season have made a huge difference for us and now this financial support will make a difference for many people in need. We are so appreciative. THANK YOU!

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Far outstripping the amount of time dedicated to swimming or games, a report released Wednesday by researchers at Rutgers University found that the average person in a pool spends the vast majority of their time urging others to enter as well. “Across demographic groups, we fou...

Do you know someone reliable who is looking for work? We are looking for a good people to supplement our existing staff for our season that is underway. If you know of someone that you would want working on YOUR swimming pool, then have them get in touch with us!

Big news everybody! It is with both a sense of excitement and a heavy heart that we make the following announcement.

After months of negotiations, we at Atlantis Pool Service have reached an agreement with Atlantis Resorts to be their exclusive in-house pool service provider for 2021 and beyond. So, Bryan, Weston, Kate and the rest of the gang will be packing up shop and heading down to the Caribbean later this month to begin our new pool service adventure.

It will be sad to leave Rhode Island and all of our wonderful customers and friendships (not to mention stuffies and pizza strips) behind, but the opportunity for Atlantis to work for Atlantis was just too good to pass up.

So, if you ever want to find the lost company of Atlantis, you’ll know where to find us... we will be down somewhere in the Caribbean Sea.

Happy April 1st! Time to book your pool opening if you haven’t already! 🤣

The schedule is rapidly filling up! It’s time to get our pool prepped before we are too busy with other things to get it done. This year the name of the game is “open early”! We are strongly recommending everyone open on a bit earlier than they normally do. The mild early winter and heavy snowfall late winter made for the perfect conditions for algae growth. You can see the layer of algae on the bottom of our pool. By early May this pool would’ve been completely green rather than clear with a layer of algae on the bottom. Starting the process a little early saves time and chemicals and ensures the pool is ready to go as soon as you want to use it! While it’s still too early to get the pools up and running (we will be re-covering this after today’s cleaning), by mid April we will be in full swing opening pools. Get your opening booked today!

Lots of traditions have fallen by the wayside this past year, but we couldn’t let this one die. The number of participants was limited and the Post-Polar-Plunge hot tub was masked up and socially distant but the two crazy pool guys took the annual New Years Day dip this morning. Fifteen consecutive years are officially in the books. Bring on 2021!

We will be doing our drawing for the honey and lip balm at the end of this week. Comment “Honey”, “Lip balm”, or “Both” to enter!

Since 2020 has had a lot of bitter elements for all of us to contend with, we have decided to end the year with a little bit of sweetness! Our owner, Bryan, is a hobby beekeeper and is donating some items for a giveaway to 4 customers of Atlantis Pool Service. We will be giving away 2, 1 lb jars of local, raw honey as well as 2, 3-packs of lip balm (vanilla, peppermint, and mandarin orange) made with organic shea butter, organic coconut oil, essential oils and pure beeswax from his hives. In order to enter, simply comment on this post "honey", "lip balm", or "both" to be entered in the drawing for either or both items. We will draw 4 names randomly on December 31st, 2020 and finish this difficult year off right with a little bit of honey!

November 17th and we finally have an hour we can spare to winterize Bryan’s pool. You’ve heard the saying about the cobbler’s kids going without shoes right? It’s always either the first or last on the list to open and close. We will have to check the Farmer’s Almanac to decided whether to open March 30th or July 5th, 2021. 😂

We are about halfway through closing season, here at Atlantis. As always, we are doing a lot of safety cover installations. If your cover is old or worn, maybe 2020 is the year to invest in a beautiful, new Loop-Loc brand safety cover. It’ll make looking at the covered pool not nearly so depressing this fall!

08/05/2020

We are sure there are a lot of messy pools out there today! Our crews will be working hard to get all of our maintenance accounts clean again as quickly as possible over the coming days. In the meantime, the best thing you can do is to scoop out any branches or big debris and keep emptying your skimmer baskets to make sure they don’t get clogged with debris and stop the system from filtering.

If you maintain your own pool you’ll want to lower the water down to normal level as soon as possible so that the skimmer is working properly. If your power is out and the system isn’t running it’s always a good idea to add a bit of liquid or powdered shock to keep the pool from turning until the power is restored.

Good luck!

07/05/2020

I realized this morning that our pool hasn’t been cleaned in over a month. As you can see there is a little dirt and debris that has accumulated, but nothing like what you’d expect after a month of no vacuuming.

This highlights a key point we often discuss with pool owners. Other than having a good filtration system, the top determining factor on the day to day cleanliness of your pool has to do with the environment around the pool. The decisions you make in terms of landscaping, plantings, trees, and decking around the pool make all the difference between a pool that usually looks clean versus one that is chronically dirty.

Many customers bemoan they fact that their pool looks dirty a day or two after cleaning. The best way to resolve that issue is to evaluate your backyard as a whole and make landscaping decisions that will allow you to enjoy a “low-maintenance swimming pool”. Who doesn’t want that?

The last four months have represented the most unusual, hectic, and stressful opening season we’ve experienced in the last 25+ years. But here we are on a beautiful Fourth of July weekend and the office phone is silent. That means that everyone is out enjoying their pools and our mission for opening season was accomplished! We couldn’t have made it through the trials and tribulations this year without the most hardworking and dedicated pool staff in the business. A huge thank you to Kate, Kaitlyn, Chris, James, Shalyn, Matt, Kyle, Brendan, Charlie, and Gian for doing all of the regular things and all of the extra things that had to happen this year. Cheers to summer! -Bryan & Weston

HELP! My pool, car, everything is covered with pollen, what can I do?

Unfortunately the only answer is not much but wait, take an antihistamine and backwash your pool filter. Pollen clogs up filters very quickly and may require backwashing at more frequent intervals. The oak and pine pollen should be gone soon enough.

Well it took many more hours to put together than our in-person class used to and required the help of a professional videographer (big shout out to Blueflash Photography for all of their help), but our Pool Maintenance 101 video is now available on our website!

The video is 90 minutes and covers all the topics you will need to understand to maintain your pool from week to week between pool opening and pool closing. We discuss:

-How the filtration system works
-How to backwash the filter and clean the pump
-How to use the waste setting
-Understanding pool chemistry (Chlorine, pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness, Chlorine Stabilizer, etc)
-Understanding Salt-based pools and how they relate to traditional chlorine pools
-Discussing issues of Algae, Metals, & Phosphates in the pool
-What chemicals to use and when to use them
-How to check the pool chemistry
-How to add specific chemicals to your pool
-Required maintenance equipment
-How to set up the maintenance equipment for vacuuming
-How a Hayward Salt System works

The whole point of this is to offer pool owners a way to take control of maintaining their pool without wasting hundreds of dollars a year on unnecessary products due to a lack of understanding chemistry. We also try to highlight the ways you can keep up with the needs of your system so you avoid scheduling costly service trips to address basic problems.

If you are interested in purchasing this video, the cost is $50 (a third of the cost that our in-person classes were previously) and you can pay via credit or debit card through a secure portal right in our website. Go to www.AtlantisRI.com and click on the tab for "M101". There you will see a preview of the video (please take pity on the un-photogenic guy we had to use in the video) and a link to the video. It'll ask you to create a login with your email and a password so you can go back and re-watch the video every time you need a refresher anytime in the future. (This will come in handy when next spring rolls around and you are out of practice with your pool maintenance skills!)

This is a brand new endeavor for us that we had to undertake with the onset of Covid-19 in a short period of time during our busiest time of the year. We didn't want current circumstances to prevent our customers from having the information they need to successfully maintain their pool, but this was a big undertaking for us to figure out at this point in the year. Hopefully we've ironed out all the kinks, but if you have any issues with purchasing or watching the video please let us know. When it comes to servicing pools this isn't our first rodeo, but we are definitely new to putting together an online offering like this!

Best of luck with your pool maintenance and we hope you have a happy and healthy summer enjoying your clean and balanced swimming pool!

Often we get people curious this time of year as to why the pool looks messy only a couple of days after it was last cleaned. Our parking lot was blown clean of debris last night at 6pm and this is what it looked like this morning at 6am from what fell off of ONE tree! Once the trees are done dropping in the next couple of weeks things will improve all around!

We have a long tradition here at Atlantis of posting something goofy on April Fools’ Day every year. It’s usually an opportunity to provide some levity as we gear up for the pool season. This year we decided with everything going on that it wasn’t the time to be making silly jokes. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t some levity to be had!

We’ve heard from so many of you in recent weeks looking forward to your pool opening as something to be excited about amidst everything going on. We wanted to do our part to help out and started opening pools yesterday (two weeks earlier than normal). We don’t have a lot of face to face customer contact in our business, but we’ve spent the last two weeks implementing many new procedures to make our service program even safer for our employees and customers alike.

So this year, we will skip the jokes and instead share our optimism for the warm days of summer ahead. And don’t worry, Bryan will be back in 365 days making a fool of himself as always!

The Sun Will Come Out

We know that there is a feeling of uncertainty for everyone right now. However, we also know that in a few short weeks the temperatures will rise and the sun will come out. When that happens, Atlantis Pool Service will be there to help provide safe and relaxing spaces for families across Rhode Island. We are dedicated to making your backyard an oasis to enjoy and a reminder of the best things in life during this difficult time. Let’s make the summer of 2020 your best Staycation yet!

We will be following all CDC guidelines and industry best-practices with every service we perform to ensure the safety of your family, our staff, and every swimming pool bather during the upcoming season.

Our phone has been ringing with people looking to book their openings asap, so we will be gearing up our service operation earlier than usual this year, once temperatures allow for pool openings. You can call now to get your opening booked.

Above all, stay positive... Brighter days are ahead!

We think Black Friday has officially jumped the shark when there are deals promoting swimming pool chemicals. Picture Christmas morning, next to the tree, telling your wife; “Merry Christmas! I got you a quart of pool metal sequestering chemical!” 😂 We hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and a holiday season filled with all the specialty pool chemicals your heart desires!

(Oh, and if your wife really DOES want some Pool Magnet or Iron Erase this year, you know who to call!)

Here’s a great activity to keep in mind for Veteran’s Day! Atlantis has been proud to support this awesome event for the past seven years. It’s great to see what the faculty and students at PVMS have done for Operation Stand Down each year on Veteran’s Day. We hope to see you there!

Okay, do you know what makes for the perfect fall activity after all that leftover Halloween candy? How about the Park View Middle School 5k to benefit Operation Stand Down on Monday, Nov. 11!

This is the 7th year that PVMS has organized its Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk (and 1 Mile Kids Run!) to raise money for Operation Stand Down Rhode Island in support of their amazing work helping our veterans. The fun for a great cause takes place at Roger Williams Park beginning in the morning of 11/11. You can register online, or you can register at the race. On Monday, we played a little hooky from taking care of pools, so we could jump in the pool ourselves! We honestly couldn't have a better crew than the one you see pictured here. These are the people who show up every day with a smile on their face and go out and get the jobs done without complaint (along with a few select members of the future Atlantis Pool Service crew from 2029). It's been a busy year so far, but it makes all the difference when you get to work with great people!
