https://legiscan.com/RI/bill/S2424/2026 RI real estate sales will now mandate the seller to test for, and correct elevated levels of Radon in residential homes. The bill was signed by the governor on 06-18-2026 and takes effect as of 06-2027. Starting June of 27, if you have a listing for a home, the sellers are now required to test for radon and correct elevated radon. The test must have been done within 1 year of the sale. Banks are exempt. And properties that will be demolished are exempt.

Inspecting a home is a skill. One that is refined by years of training, experience and knowledge. Chimney inspections are more involved than just looking at mortar and bricks. There are 33 things to check when looking at a chimney. This 1965 cape cod has a wood burning fireplace and a flue for oil heat. When checking out the basement, this home had wood forms below the hearth extension. The wood forms were to allow pouring cement and capping the hearth extension with tiles. The structure inside the fire box is made the same way, with wood forms. Now after the cement sets, the wood was supposed to be removed. if its not removed, the heat of fires transfers down and can ignite the wood through a process of Pyrolysis. Pyrolysis is when heat slowly converts wood fuel into free burning fuel. It may not always happens, but it happens. Its a standard inspection item to look for. When you are in the basement, you need to open the ash dump door and look up. If the wood forms are below the firebox, you are risking a fire inside an inaccessible area which can smolder for long periods. You may not even know where the smoke is coming from. This can lead to carbon monoxide gas. When the home inspector points out to wood forms under the hearth, its not a petty observation. its a life safety hazard

CPSC has secured the removal of hazardous male-to-male extension cord listings from major e-commerce platforms, including Walmart, eBay and AliExpress, and is warning consumers to stop using these products immediately.

The cords are often used to supply power from a generator to a residential electrical system, a dangerous practice known as backfeeding that that can result in serious injury or death from electrocution or fire.

Their short length also increases the likelihood that generators will be operated in enclosed spaces or too close to homes, creating a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
