🏠💧 CRAWLSPACE HUMIDITY: TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE CAN DAMAGE YOUR HOME!

Did you know that the humidity underneath your home can have a major impact on its structural integrity?

Most homeowners know that excessive moisture in a crawlspace is bad, but what many don’t realize is that extremely dry conditions can create problems too!

💦 TOO MUCH HUMIDITY

When your crawlspace stays excessively humid, moisture can begin affecting the wooden structure supporting your home.

❌ Wood rot and deterioration

❌ Mold and mildew growth

❌ Sagging or weakened floor joists

❌ Musty odors entering your living space

❌ Increased risk of wood-destroying pests

❌ Moisture damage to subflooring and insulation

🏜️ TOO LITTLE HUMIDITY

Believe it or not, excessively dry conditions can also affect your home’s framing!

❌ Excessive drying and shrinking of floor joists and framing lumber

❌ Gaps developing between wooden components

❌ Increased cracking, splitting, and checking in wood

❌ Squeaky floors caused by wood movement

❌ Seasonal movement that can affect flooring and finishes

⚠️ THE GOAL ISN’T TO REMOVE EVERY BIT OF MOISTURE!

Wood naturally absorbs and releases moisture depending on its environment. When humidity levels change dramatically, that wood expands and contracts.

Over time, excessive moisture or extreme drying can contribute to structural and flooring problems.

🎯 WHAT’S THE IDEAL HUMIDITY?

For many properly sealed and conditioned crawlspaces, maintaining relative humidity around 45%–55% is a reasonable target.

The goal is consistent moisture control, not making the crawlspace as dry as possible.

❄️🔥 HOME RUN HOMEOWNER TIP: IS YOUR HVAC SYSTEM WORKING HARDER THAN IT SHOULD?

Did you know that one of the biggest enemies of your heating and cooling system is something as simple as restricted airflow?

Your HVAC system needs proper airflow to operate efficiently, maintain comfortable temperatures, and prevent unnecessary wear on its components.

🏠 Here are 5 things every homeowner should know!

✅ 1. Change Your Air Filters!
A dirty air filter restricts airflow, forcing your system to work harder. Check your filter monthly and replace it when needed.

✅ 2. Keep Your Vents Open!
Closing too many supply vents can increase pressure inside your ductwork and reduce system performance. Your system was designed to move a certain amount of air!

✅ 3. Keep Your Outdoor Unit Clear!
Leaves, grass clippings, and debris can restrict airflow through your outdoor unit. Keep vegetation trimmed back and allow plenty of room for circulation.

✅ 4. Don’t Ignore Unusual Noises!
Rattling, grinding, buzzing, or squealing sounds can be early warning signs of mechanical or electrical problems. Catching them early may prevent more expensive repairs.

✅ 5. Bigger Isn’t Always Better!
An oversized HVAC system can actually cause comfort problems! Short cycling, uneven temperatures, and poor humidity control are common issues with improperly sized equipment.

💡 HERE’S SOMETHING MOST HOMEOWNERS DON’T REALIZE:

Your HVAC system doesn’t just heat and cool your home. During cooling season, it also helps remove humidity from the air.

That’s especially important here in Georgia, where high humidity can make your home feel uncomfortable even when the thermostat says 72°!

A properly sized, maintained, and installed system can make a tremendous difference in comfort, efficiency, and equipment life.

⚡⛈️ STORMS ARE ROLLING IN, GEORGIA! LET’S TALK SAFETY! ⛈️⚡

With severe weather moving through our area, power outages are always a possibility! Here at Home Run Heating, Cooling and Electrical, we want to share some important safety tips to help keep you and your family safe when the storms hit!

🔌 1. PORTABLE GENERATORS, PROTECT OUR LINEMEN!

This one is EXTREMELY important!

If you’re using a portable generator to power your home’s electrical system, you MUST have a properly installed transfer switch or approved generator interlock system.

When using a generator interlock system, your main breaker MUST be OFF while the generator breaker is ON!

Simply turning off your main breaker without a proper transfer switch or interlock is NOT a safe substitute!

Improper generator connections can send electricity backward onto utility lines, potentially electrocuting the linemen working to restore power.

NEVER plug a generator into a regular household outlet to power your home!

💧 2. KEEP EXTENSION CORDS OUT OF WATER!

Water and electricity are a dangerous combination!

Keep extension cord connections out of puddles, standing water, and rain. Always use properly sized, outdoor-rated extension cords, and never handle electrical connections with wet hands.

🏠 3. NEVER RUN A GENERATOR INSIDE!

Not in your garage, not in your crawlspace, and definitely not inside your home!

Generators produce carbon monoxide, an invisible, odorless gas that can be deadly.

Always operate generators outdoors, at least 20 feet away from doors, windows, and vents, with the exhaust directed away from your home.

🔥 4. DON’T OVERLOAD YOUR GENERATOR!

Just because your generator has multiple outlets doesn’t mean it can power everything in your house!

Running your air conditioner, water heater, stove, and other large appliances simultaneously can overload your generator.

Know your generator’s capacity and prioritize essential appliances.

⛽ 5. NEVER REFUEL A RUNNING GENERATOR!

Always shut your generator off before adding gasoline. Never attempt to refuel while the engine is running!

⚡ 6. STAY AWAY FROM DOWNED POWER LINES!

Just because a power line is on the ground doesn’t mean it isn’t energized!

Never approach or touch a downed power line. Stay well away and report it to your utility provider or emergency services.

Remember, electricity can travel through wet ground, fences, and other conductive materials.

🔦 7. PREPARE BEFORE THE STORM HITS!

✔️ Charge your phones and backup batteries.

✔️ Make sure your flashlights are working.

✔️ Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

✔️ Keep extra batteries available.

✔️ Make sure your generator is ready.

✔️ Know where your electrical panel is located.

✔️ Stay away from flooded electrical equipment.

AND ONE LAST THING - THINK ABOUT OUR LINEMEN!

When the power goes out, there are men and women leaving their families and heading straight into dangerous conditions to restore electricity to our communities.

They’re working around high-voltage equipment, fallen trees, damaged poles, and unpredictable weather.

The last thing they should have to worry about is someone improperly connecting a portable generator and sending electricity back onto the lines they’re repairing.

A little knowledge and preparation can prevent a tragedy.

Calling them and tying up their lines will not get your power back on any faster.

Stay safe, Georgia. Look out for your neighbors, protect your families, and let’s make sure everyone including our linemen, gets home safely! ⚡⛈️

⚡ WHY DOES MY BREAKER KEEP TRIPPING?

A breaker that trips isn’t necessarily a bad breaker. In many cases, it’s doing exactly what it was designed to do, protecting the wiring in your home.

A breaker may trip because of:

An overloaded circuit - Too many appliances or devices are pulling power at the same time.

A short circuit - Electricity is taking a path it shouldn’t, causing a sudden increase in current.

A ground fault - Current is leaking to ground somewhere in the circuit.

A wiring issue - Loose connections, damaged wiring, or failing equipment can sometimes cause repeated trips.

One trip every once in a while may have a simple explanation. But if you reset a breaker and it continues to trip, don’t keep forcing it back on.

That breaker may be telling you there’s a problem that needs attention.

Knowing the warning signs in your home is part of keeping it safe. ⚡

☀️ Did you know you can put UV light INSIDE your HVAC system?

Your indoor HVAC system can be a prime location for mold and microbial growth because of the moisture around the ev***rator coil.

A properly installed UV light can help:

🦠 Reduce mold and microbial growth
💨 Keep your indoor coil cleaner
🏠 Improve overall indoor air quality
👃 Help reduce musty odors caused by microbial growth

Your HVAC system circulates air throughout your entire home. Keeping the inside of that system clean matters!

Ask Home Run Heating, Cooling & Electrical about adding UV protection to your HVAC system.
