Weekend Nor’easter Storm: Expected Impacts for Coventry – Friday, 9/25/2026:
The Town, in coordination with the CT Department of Emergency Management/Homeland Security, has participated in preparation planning for this storm. The National Weather Service is reporting that the storm is in the Atlantic Ocean off the Virginia coast and is traveling north and northwest toward New Jersey. This is a slow-moving storm with much rain and wind. Impacts from the Nor’easter are expected to affect eastern Connecticut beginning this evening as winds begin to pick up speed, with the peak of the storm occurring Saturday through Sunday, with lesser impacts continuing into Monday morning. If the storm track stays on its current course, the primary concern for Coventry will be downed trees and power lines due to steady winds reaching 30-40 mph, and with wind gusts of up to 50 mph. Minor flooding may occur on Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning.
Prepare for power outages that may last several days. Finalize assembly of your emergency plan and supplies. Remove items from your yard that could become airborne, such as flags, patio furniture and lawn ornaments. Coventry Public Works has made an effort to clear storm drains, but if you have one near your property and notice it has become blocked with debris, your assistance to clear them could help prevent flooding in your neighborhood.
Eversource has utility crews staged throughout the State for a timely response. Report downed trees involving power lines to 911. For blocked roads without power line involvement, call the Dispatch Center at Coventry Police Department at 860-742-7331. Public Works has staff and equipment on standby and will respond to road blockages and downed trees not involving power lines. A special note to lakefront property owners: The Coventry Lake gate is already open in anticipation of up to 2” of rainfall. Secure your boats, docks and floats so that they won’t swamp or become submerged should rainfall exceed the gate’s ability to keep up with rising lake levels.
