This week we are building a lot of double hung sash for the 1922 High Grove School. Justin Smith from SRS is with us in the shop all week doing some training as well as taking process pictures for his upcoming book “Double Hung Sash Making”. We are excited to have here and appreciate his knowledge and expertise! More pictures to come as we start to assemble

While we were working in the 1915 Paramount Theatre in downtown Austin last week, I was told a story about the “Houdini Hole” - a small, legendary hole in the ceiling the theatre, located to the left of the Saint Cecilia painting.  Legend says Harry Houdini had it drilled during his 1916 performance for a suspended levitation trick. It remains as a preserved piece of theater history.  It is believed that in 1916, during an eight-day run at the then-named Majestic Theatre, Houdini’s crew cut the hole to facilitate a levitation or suspended escape trick.  The hole has never been repaired, and as of 2026, the Paramount Theatre has confirmed it is a protected part of its history during renovations.  I love history like this!

Today while we were doing our thing and working on the removal and restoration of the Paramount Theater windows, they were filming on stage fundraising videos and videos about the process so I got pulled in to talk about our part. I’ve never been backstage at the Paramount Theatre or on stage for that matter, of course! So it was pretty intimidating but was grateful to be included! Last time I saw a show at the Paramount theater with my son Jack, it was to see Bill Murray and his blues band the “Blood Brothers”. Just think about all of the acts that have performed on this stage in the last 111 years! I was told a story about Houdini performing in this theater, but I’ll share that on a separate post — It’s been such a great experience working with this team. Please contribute if you can! The full restoration of the theater starts in June 2026 and will take 10 months. And then they will do the state theater next. It’s going to look amazing!

Our work continues at the Paramount Theater in downtown Austin, TX. Today we extracted 11 original windows from 1915 and prepped the jambs and got them boarded up. The sash will go to our shop for restoration. Their goal is to raise approximately 65 Million bucks for the full theater restoration - this will take 10 months starting in June so please pitch in if you can!

The Paramount Theater Team came to visit our shop today to check progress and see our process! These balcony doors and transoms have looked out over Congress Ave in Austin for 111 years and the restoration is coming along nicely. All of the window and door components are original except 3 transom sash. They are going to look great fully restored, functional and back in place.
