Important Reminders for California Homeowners!

California's $1,000 Law: What You Need to Know

As a California homeowner, it's essential to understand the state's laws regarding home improvement projects. One crucial law to know is the $1,000 rule.

According to the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB), any home improvement project that exceeds $1,000 in combined labor and materials costs requires a licensed contractor.

Here are some key details to keep in mind:

- The $1,000 limit applies to the total project cost, including labor and materials.
- This law applies to all home improvement projects, including repairs, renovations, and new constructions.
- If a project exceeds $1,000 you must hire a licensed contractor to perform the work.
- Unlicensed workers can perform projects under $1,000 but they must provide you with a written disclosure stating they are not licensed.

Homeowners Beware: The Hidden Dangers of Hiring Unlicensed Contractors

Hiring an unlicensed contractor can put you at risk of:

- Financial liability if a worker is injured on your property
- Lawsuits and costly settlements
- Subpar workmanship and costly repairs
- Potential fines and penalties

If an unlicensed contractor's worker is injured on your property, YOU could be held responsible!

Protect yourself and your investment:

- Always verify a contractor's license status on the CSLB website
- Check for workers' compensation insurance and liability insurance
- Get multiple bids and references before hiring a contractor

Don't gamble with your financial security! Hire licensed contractors who prioritize your protection.

My American Dream:

A Journey of Hope, Resilience and Community
As I reflect on my journey from Lima, Peru, to the small towns of California, I am reminded of the power of hope, determination and community. My story is one of struggle and triumph, of finding a new home and building a life from scratch.

I vividly remember the day I arrived in America, clutching my parents' hands tightly. We had left behind the familiar streets of Lima, seeking a better life. The uncertainty was palpable, but my parents' resolve was unwavering. They had sacrificed everything for a chance at the American dream, and I was determined to make it a reality.

Crockett, California, welcomed us with open arms. The small town became our haven, where friendships blossomed and dreams took root. My parents worked tirelessly, and I followed their example, pursuing higher education and building businesses from the ground up. The struggles were real – poverty, language barriers and cultural adjustments – but our community rallied around us.

In Groveland, I found love and started a family of my own. My three children, Donavin, Tyler and Nathaniel, brought joy and purpose to my life. Though divorce brought its challenges, we found a new sense of home in Sonora, California, where my children grew and thrived.

Through trials and triumphs, I learned the value of community. As a small business owner, I understand the struggles and gratification that come with building something from scratch. For over 20 years, I've quietly supported my community, driven by a sense of duty and gratitude. My construction business – offering plumbing, electrical, remodeling and repair services – has been a labor of love, allowing me to give back to the community that has given me so much.

Now, I ask for your support. Not just for my business, but for the community we're building together. Let's work together to create a stronger, more resilient community, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

As I look back on my journey, I realize that the American dream is not just mine – it's yours, too. It's the dream of every immigrant, every small business owner and every community member who strives to make a difference.

I just wanted to mention how disappointed I am although it won’t do much of a difference except vent. I have donated to Tuolumne Park and Recreation and have reached out to large corporations in our community and was very surprised at Walmart the largest corporation in this county and they donated, small but donated with open arms to request more as needed and see if they could help. I also reached out to Apple Bees and they also without question donated, small but gave something with again open arms to return and see what they will do. I reached out to Lowe’s home improvement and have heard nothing from them. I even asked for a small donation anything helps. I’m a small business contractor in our lovely county and are very disappointed in Lowe’s. Tuolumne Park and Recreation spends lots of money and so do I at Lowe’s. My donations as small as they are help I’m sure but to see a larger corporation like Lowe’s do nothing is very disappointing. Okay, my rant is over. If you work for a large corporation in the Tuolumne county Tuolumne Park and Recreation can always use help.
