Most roofs do not fail overnight. They give you signs first, and if you catch them early you can often repair instead of replace. Here are five worth a two-minute look this week, especially after the spring storms that rolled through the Valley.

Shingles that are curling, cupping, or missing.
Granules collecting in your gutters and at the base of the downspouts. That sandy grit is the shingle surface wearing away.

Daylight coming through the attic, or dark stains on the underside of the roof deck.
A roofline that looks like it is sagging or dipping instead of running straight.
Water spots showing up on ceilings or upstairs walls.

One sign on its own is not always an emergency. Two or three together usually means it is worth having someone look before the next round of summer storms.

Full tear-off and replacement on a 1983 Cape Cod out in Rome. The original shingles had been patched about as far as they could go, and on a steep 12:12 pitch with three dormers, every repair meant another trip up a roof that was only going to need the next one.

The homeowner was tired of the repair cycle. This is the roof that ends it: built to hold up through Ashtabula County winters and last decades, not seasons.

Today is Memorial Day. Before the cookouts and the long weekend wind down, we want to pause and recognize what the day is actually for: the service members who didn't come home.

Across Mahoning and Trumbull counties, plenty of families carry that loss quietly. Neighbors, classmates, parents, kids.

We don't have anything to say about Memorial Day that the day itself doesn't already say better. We just wanted to stop and acknowledge it.

Three roofs we looked at recently. Three different answers.

We're hiring an experienced roofer here in Cortland.

This is a full-time crew position with year-round work. Forty-hour weeks. No seasonal layoffs in January, no scrambling to find side work in February. We keep our crews busy through the winter because we book the work to do it.

What we're looking for: someone who's been on a roof before, knows the difference between tear-off and overlay, can read a pitch, and shows up on time. Metal experience is a plus but not required. We'll train the right person.

What you get:
Competitive pay based on what you actually know and what you can do, not a flat starting rate that takes three years to grow out of. A real path to foreman or crew leader if you want it, with the responsibility and pay that comes with it. A small, local crew where you're not a number.
