Concrete soaks up whatever’s sitting on top of it. When salty meltwater gets into the surface and refreezes overnight, it stresses the top layer. Do that all winter and the surface starts flaking and peeling, leaving a rough, pitted finish with the little stones showing through. It’s called scaling, and it usually gets worse every year once it starts.
A few easy things that help:
❄️ Shovel early so you need less salt
⏳ Use sand for traction where you can
💦 Rinse the slab in spring to wash leftover salt away
🛡️ If your concrete’s never been sealed, do it before the first hard freeze
